Synopsis

Secondhand Lions
In this family-friendly comedy drama, Walter (Haley Joel Osment) is a shy and bookish boy just short of his teens whose mother impulsively decides to leave him for the summer with his eccentric grand-uncles, Hub (Robert Duvall) and Garth (Michael Caine). Walter isn't especially happy about being left in the middle of Texas with two old men, while Hub and Garth aren't too pleased to be stuck minding a boy, especially one who isn't accustomed to hunting, fishing, or firearms. When Walter starts hearing local gossip about his uncles' wild and wooly pasts, he begins asking a few questions, and while Hub and Garth don't enjoy having the boy poking into their pasts, as they start telling tales of their youthful adventures, they find themselves itching for some new adventures in their lives. Soon Walter is a semi-willing accomplice as his elderly guardians rediscover the wild, impulsive spirit of youth. Secondhand Lions was produced in part by the well-respected visual effects house Digital Domain, who also helped create the imagery for the film's flashback sequences. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

    Good family film

A humorous family film on a boy being sent by his irresponsible mom (she constantly lies to him on where is she and where she is working at) to stay with his two eccentric uncles for the summer. She wants him to find where the uncles have hidden their money. However, the son instead finds the missing fatherly parenting that he has missed all his life. The movie plays out like an adventure story, similar to the Princess Bride, with flashback scenes showing one uncle’s action filled life and romance. Several scenes are funny, such as the uncles having lunch with the son when four teenage punks try to start a fight.

Second Hand Lions was a surprise for me. When I first viewed the trailer, what I saw did not impress me or sway me to watch the film. Word of mouth broke me down to see this film. What I saw was magical, heart-warming, great family entertainment I could relate to. Michael Caine and Robert Duvall really steal the show as Haley Joel Osment's eccentric uncles. I urge everyone to give this film a try as you will not be disappointed. The crazy stories the Uncle's tell Osment fit with the reality of the film. This film is more than a coming of age film or even a fantasy film. This is a film families need to sit down with each other and view together. This film leaves an impression and is memorable.

I've watched this several times and bought copies for family and friends. You laugh, you cry. It's funny, sad, heart-warming and up-lifting. I love Robert Duvall in this! He reminds me of my father and makes me want to be a better man. Inside the tough exterior, his devotion to his one true love and his empathy for others as he teaches wayward teens how to be "real men" is touching. My favorite scenes are the fight in the diner (hilarious) and the speech on how to be a real man (moving). Highly recommended.

This is the story of two somewhat eccentric old - maybe timeless is a better word -- brothers who were missing for decades doing who-knows-what. They've now reappeared and the relatives are circling, hoping to cash in when the two gentlemen die. When a troubled nephew is dropped off "for a few weeks -- a month at most" -- things change for all of them and he slowly hears a story of the years they were gone. The story-line is a entertaining and the cast is fantastic. A movie the family can enjoy together. Be ready for a lot of surprises and the occasional tear. Don't miss the alternate and deleted scenes.

Well written movie great for the whole family. And now you can get it cheaper then ever even more reason it's a must have. I watched it many times.

We rented this video after one of my daughters watched it in school, but missed the ending. I thought I would be bored, but the whole family loved it. It is a refreshing change from all the teen movies we usually watch. Michael Caine and Robert Duvall were great as tender-hearted, rebel rousing bachelor uncles who are put in an unexpected postion of raising a great-nephew they just met. I bought this video for our family, my dad, and put one in our Christmas exchange!

The quality of the Blu-ray Picture & Audio is better than the DVD. Robert Duvall & Michael Caine turn in good performances as the two uncles of a young boy left at their home by his mother, who is more interested in her boyfriend than in her son. She also wants her son to try to find the location of a hidden horde of money his uncles reportedly have. This is a must see movie which in my opinion is a classic.

The movie offers lighthearted good humor and is one you will enjoy again and again, each time just as refreshing as the first. A movie the family could easily enjoy without foul language, etc. A good movie I would recommend for anyone! We rec'd one as a gift more than 5 years ago and purchased this one for a gift to share with someone else. Hope you will enjoy as much as we have and hope to, in the future.
