this review will be more beneficial to the ordinary joe than any other you will read so please read carefully. this film is incredibly heavy, i mean to the point that you will have trouble finishing the film. during the first 45 minutes of the film i was thinking "this is one of the best horror films i have ever seen", its creepy, the plot is good, the acting is superb, etc, etc. however, the last 45 minutes of the film is like a completely different movie. i mean its shifts gears to such an extreme that its really difficult to stomach. and i don't mean because you're all of a sudden engaged in a bunch of blood and guts which the first half of the film didn't expose you to. but rather the brutal nature and the sheer savagery of the subject matter itself. you would really have to be a sick, sick puppy to watch this film in its entirety on the first go around and be unbothered. most of the people which seem to rate this film on various sites are horror fanatics. the rest of us, who just enjoy a good scare with a few friends will find this film to be somewhat of a disappointment. i can't really argue that its a bad film, that of course would be subjective. i can however earnestly proclaim that this film is very, very effed up. if your just looking for a good scare, rent the descent. if you want to feel nauseated with yourself and all of humanity, then i suggest you pick this film. very well done indeed, but extremely brutal and very unsettling.

THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! I had to watch this twice cause I wasn't sure how to feel about this film. The main actresses did an awesome job and the storyline and pacing were just right, there never seemed to be a lull in what was happening up to the very end. Yes, there is a lot of blood and gore but they work well with the tension and frightening atmosphere of the movie.
The last 30 minutes were hard for me to watch and the repetition of the beating scenes wore me down which I sense was the directors intent? I guess you could say that I felt "numb" afterwards. And just when I thought it was coming to an end, I was given another dose of brutality. The very last scene of Anna and the look on her face is haunting and sad.
I can say that I hope that US studios take note and start to make horror films like this soon. I look forward to seeing future films from this director. This film has already been tagged as "torture p*rn" but don't let that keep you from watching it. Experience it for yourself. Even if you end up not liking the movie, you can see what positive effects it can possibly have on future horror films. This movie is definitely not for the squemish because it is a brutal, depressing, and nightmarish journey. The French are indeed doing something right. I would also recommend FRONTIERS, HAUTE TENSION, and INSIDE. 5/5 stars

First of all, I'm a true movie buff. My wife and I love movies, especially the horror genre. We've always liked foreign films for their plots, but not so much on their acting. This movie blew us away!!! Regardless of the language, this movie was incredibly intense! Great plot, good acting, great cinamatography, and it made you want to watch all over again. We loved this movie! I highly recommend it! It's a mix between Hostel and H*llraiser. Ignore the fact that it's French, and just watch it! We as Americans should take notes from guys like Pascal Laugier and Dario Argento.
