Beware - early models have defrost issue
Posted by: oremac from: on
We got this fridge as an open box item at a significant discount about 4 months ago. Had it been completely new it would have went back to BestBuy. We have to have a counter depth model as that is all that will fit in our kitchen. These are a whole lot more expensive than full size fridges, so when we saw this one we jumped on it. After about 3 months ice that had slowly been building up on the condenser coils started coming out the vents behind the Glide and Serve drawer. This is not an area that is easily visible, so fortunately we noticed it before the fridge completely stopped working. This issue is probably why the original purchaser returned it. This is a known issue with this model where the defrost cycle does not run long enough, and the fix is a new main computer control board. LG had a local service company replace it at no cost, but we still had to empty out the fridge and all the shelves and drawers so the repairman could remove the ice from the coils. Then we had to wait two weeks for the part to arrive, and the technician to return and replace it in the back of the fridge.
It's too bad because otherwise we really love this fridge. It provides so much more space than our old side-by-side. The filtered water tastes great, and the ice-maker, though small, provides sufficient ice for our every day needs.
If you are looking to buy this model (choices for french-door counter depth models are very limited), I would suggest first calling LG and giving them the serial number of the unit to see if it has an older computer board that has the defrost issue.

High on appearance low on performance!
Posted by: NOTAFANOFLG from: on
Purchased our refrigerator on March 20 2015. While waiting for the 3rd repairman in the last 10 days, thought now would be a good time to rate the refrigerator. I love the counter depth, stainless steel and overall looks of the refrigerator. If only it worked as good as it looks. Food inside the refrigerator was freezing and there was a build up of ice. After the first repair, we experienced the same problem a few days later. That same day, after the second repair, we were getting errors on the refrigerator and freezer. Customer service was anything but helpful--told us to unplug to clear the errors. Next morning same errors but the refrigerator was NOT cooling. Repairman just left (for the third time) and the fan was not working and again there was a small build up of ice. My experience with LG customer service has not been good. We are convinced we have a LEMON! No complaints on service from Best Buy or repairmen. We should have done more research on LG before buying as further research shows many others have experienced the same from LG, Anxious to see if Best Buy posts this as ratings they have on this are good.

New electronics is buggy causing multiple problems
Posted by: Barestos from: on
Refrigerator was running fine and we liked it as long as it was functioning properly. But after 5 months, ice and frost started building up in fridge section. LG tech updated firmware on electronic ckt board. A month later fans behind freezer section very noisy. LG tech came again and removed ice and said it should be fine now. A day later, we hear loud drilling noise once a hour. Not sure, what's wrong now. LG call center overseas is horrible. Every time they take 30 mins to understand what's going on and insist on having copy of receipt to ensure fridge was bought within last 12 months even though they admit this new model was only launched six months ago!
At this point, we are frustrated being beta testing site for LG's new model. Can't be sitting home for 4 hour window for LG technician. Better to wait another year once this model is fully debugged. In general we like LG french door models, but not this particular one and their overseas call center team needs some serious improvement.
We heard that several other customers are having similar (frost in fridge section) problem.

Faulty ice dispenser
Posted by: etauch from: on
The style of this refrigerator is nice, and it is one of the limited counter depth options out there. But my personal experience is quite disappointing.
After one year of ownership, and subsequently an expired warranty, the ice dispenser stopped working properly. Big chunks of ice form in the chute that freeze together, blocking ice from exiting properly. I tried removing the ice holder and breaking up the ice in the chute like Kristoff in Frozen, but it inevitably always reforms.
I have had two different technicians come take a look and they cannot come up with a viable solution. The ice maker still makes ice, but instead of just pushing the chute I have to grab the ice old school with my hands from the ice box, which is not readily accessible.
It is not as big of an issue as world hunger, but in the greater scheme of things when you spend upwards of $3000 plus for a refrigerator one would expect that it works like it is supposed to. Unfortunately, for me and my family, that hasn't been the case with this refrigerator.

Would give it ZERO stars if I could

LG appliances are absolute junk. I purchased this refrigerator and have had nothing but problems with it. I've lost my entire freezer worth of food now 4 times. The freezer just decides to stop working. I've contacted LG probably 20 different times and they offer no assistance. I WILL NEVER BUY an LG Product again. Seriously reconsider purchasing. Absolute disappointment!

Should have bought the Kitchenaid. Defrost issue
Posted by: REVIEW from: on
5 months into this product and I've had to throw so many vegetables because it freezes in the glide and serve tray. Finally one day find out the display showing r & dh codes on the refrigerator. Called LG and was told the defroster tried to defrost and quit after 1 hr.. Solution.. unplug the fridge and problem solved.. really? Called back and was passed on to smart diagnostic team, who did the smart diagnostic over the phone.. Everything is working fine.. I kept insisting that there is problem and I would like to have a technician come over.. He comes over 3 days later and first thing is that this fridge does not have an updated defrosting software. Apparently this model has problems defrosting for refrigerators manufactured between July and December 2014 according to the technician..So LG knew about this but did nothing to reach out and fix this issue and when I called the first thing they should have mentioned based on the serial number is that there is a problem with the defrosting software. Only when I insisted on having a technician come out, did they fix the problem. Do yourself a favor and buy another brand.

Great refrigerator after design problem was fixed
Posted by: TransformersFan from: on
Consumer reports gave this refrigerator a "Very Good" rating on noise level. I kept reading about customers complaining about the noise and wanted to know why CR would give it such a good rating for noise. After 3 months our refrigerator started to make a loud humming noise which could be heard throughout our house. We called for service and the repairman said that certain serial numbers of this model had defective board installed in them. The sound was the ice build up in around the fan casing because the defective board did not program the refrigerator with enough defrost time and the ice or frost did not melt.
After the board was replaced it runs very quiet. I gave it four starts because no I was sold a good refrigerator that had a factory defect. Good thing the refrigerator was still under warranty and we didn't have to pay a dime for the repair.

An Excellent Refrigerator with One Caveat
Posted by: sungator from: Phoenix, AZ on
This refrigerator is essentially the counter-depth equivalent to a full-size LG refrigerator we had at our previous house, and which we liked very much, so when our current 14 year old unit developed problems, we focused on LG products again. We like this unit for the excellent interior lighting, quiet operation (quieter than the previous LG), ice maker placement, flexibility in shelf arrangement, easy-open freezer door, and general good looks. We don't use much ice, so I can't comment on the issues other reviewers have had with ice production.
We have had the unit for only a month, and we haven't had any operational issues so far. We'll keep our fingers crossed, since some other reviewers haven't been as fortunate.
I would rate the unit five stars except for one thing. This unit replaced a built-in refrigerator, so there was cabinetry on both sides of the refrigerator space. We didn't want to go to the expense of another built-in, so we bought the counter depth unit, thinking that it would amount to just about the same thing. But when the unit was in place and the front feet extended to lift it off the front rollers, the bottom edge of the unit protruded 1-1/2 inches from the face of the cabinet while the top edge was flush with the face of the cabinet. I was able to rectify this situation by placing a strip of 1/2 inch plywood on the floor at the rear of the unit and using some carpenters' shims to make little ramps for the rear rollers to ascend when the unit was pushed toward the wall, raising the rear of the unit enough to compensate for its natural backward lean. But I shouldn't have had to do this with a $3000+ refrigerator. It would be very simple for LG to include adjustable rear legs to facilitate making the unit exactly vertical to match the edge of the cabinetry, just like is done with built-in refrigerators. It looks fine now, but it can require a little work to get there.

Don't buy an LG!!!!
Posted by: Kellykellykelly from: on
Bought this fridge in March 2015 during a kitchen remodel. It stopped working just 7 months later in September. LG's customer service could not have been worse and left us without a working fridge for a week. Gping a week without a fridge is annoying if you are an adult who is gone all day, but as a mom with 2 kids under 2 who need to drink milk throughout the day is an absolute nightmare. LG do not care about their customers and it shows through their inept and lazy attitude towards customer service.

exceptional capacity for counter-depth
Posted by: JCinDC from: on
Note: we installed 3 weeks ago. So far, so good. Highlights:
Exceptional capacity for counter-depth (nearly standard capacity)
Fantastic lighting throughout. Every fridge looks well lit when empty. The real test is once it's packed full. You'll notice the advantage of multiple sources of lighting compared to a single overhead light.
Smart use of interior space on the "ice machine door" for shallower condiment bottles
Convenient access to freezer items using 2 drawers in addition to spacious bottom bins
Water and ice have neutral taste - good filtration
Additional note: non-magnetic doors (neither good nor bad - just take note). We'll find some suction cup clips for our fridge art.
