Awesome Drone! Posted by: from: on This craft is awesome in comparison to the DJI Phantom 3 Pro that I had and returned. Even though the Phantom 3 is ready to go out of the box with camera & gimbal, I prefer to stick with the Solo. The Solo is more solidly built and you can program it to fly by itself. It is really easy to fly and it is very steady even in windy conditions. Provide your own GoPro 3/4 camera and you are all set and that's a plus because if GoPro decides to update to a 5, you can still use it on the solo. This might not be true if have the gimbal though which by the way does NOT come with it. It is sold separately and it won't be released until sometime in July. With the Phantom, you are stuck with the camera and gimbal that comes with it. It has fail safe features that will recall Solo back to its launch location should something go wrong. This is a keeper!

Great product - but stay in open areas for safety! Posted by: from: on This is a great quadcopter. It is very easy to fly, but be aware that this ease is provided by software that requires a good GPS signal. Therefore, for safe, easy flying, use it in areas without trees, overhead wires, large metal objects, etc., that can interfere with the GPS signal. Can be flown w/o GPS, but flying in manual requires practice. The photos and video I have shot with this quad (GoPro 4 Black - 4K) are FANTASTIC - very smooth when using the optional gimbal. The smart shots work well and look very professional. But, read some 3DR Solo forums before purchasing, so you know what to expect. This is a great tool - for sure not a toy!

Awesome drone if you can get it on Sale Posted by: from: bellflower on I bought this drone for the normal stuff people usually use drones for: flying it around, cinematic shots, and take a peak at your hot neighbor, all the normal stuff. Anyways. I bought this when it was on sale and included the gimbal, extra battery, and extra propellers, otherwise these extra parts would be an additional $380. So I bought this full setup for $499.99. The sad thing is that 3DR has announced they would be leaving the consumer drone market. This is a great drone but doesn't have all the bells and whistles like the DJI phantom 4 or even 3. It doesn't have an optical flow sensor or sensor for obstacle avoidance. What does this mean you might be asking? Well it means it doesn't do a good of a job of hoovering as the DJI or if you have on follow mode it will just follow and not look out for obstacles in it's path, so it could hit something and potentially be severely damaged. If you can afford it go for the DJI Phantom 4. The only real thing the 3DR solo has going for it is it's smart cinematic shots which makes it easy for a beginner to take great video shots or pictures with this drone. 3DR made the Solo for this purpose and it fulfills this but it's not as smart as 3DR claims it is.

Amazing Quadcopter!! Posted by: from: Arizona on This is probably the best quadcopter you can buy for the price point because it is truly an amazing aerial recording unit. I am getting shots that I only see in big blockbuster movies which is pretty amazing in my book and the fact that it is future proof at least for a while is another great aspect. On top of all this, it is American made and comes with the only fly-away warranty so I mean what more can you ask for. I can't wait for an optical flow sensor, the ballistic parachute or other gadgets for the expansion bay to release in the Made for Solo program. It is also good to note that in my experience, which is almost 100 hours of flight time now, I have not had the 3DR Solo fly-away or do anything it wasn't supposed to. As long as you fly it properly and safely, it will do anything and everything you want it too without a hitch.

First Gen Problems Posted by: from: on My experience this far with the SOLO Drone by 3DR has been one of highs and lows. Luckily none of the lows have included flyaways or crashes, but unfortunately the highs were dampened by poor GPS connections, a delayed gimbal delivery date, and shorter than promised radio range in all but a perfect environment. Leaving the delayed gimbal aside (I'll take it as a sign that I need to work on my patience), there are still two main issues which I and many others have experienced when flying the Solo. The first is that almost every time I go to fly my Solo it has trouble connecting to the satellites to get a GPS lock. Sometimes this means that I just have to wait 5-10 minutes (the Phantom 3 will GPS lock in less than a minute even in urban environments) but other times I have had to skip flying altogether out of fear of flying without a return to home point created and set. Now even though I am hoping that this can be fixed with a simple firmware update, many people online believe that it is a hardware issue, attributable to the lack of a GLONAS receiver or a raised GPS mast. The second issue is the decreased radio range. 3DR promises streaming video and radio control of up to half a mile, and even though I assumed that just like a car’s mile per gallon rating it was a best case scenario, I didn’t expect to only ever get half of what was promised. I live and fly in pretty rural areas without any obstructions to speak of and yet I have only ever been able to get 1500’ feet away before I lose radio connection (luckily it returns to home). I had to look up how much a half a mile was (2640’ FYI) because I was so sure I had my numbers wrong. Maybe you can get the range they promise flying from the top of a sand dune in the desert but in real world situations you won't achieve anything close to the range they promise unless you upgrade the controllers antennas. Now other than those two major problems, I have had a great experience with the Solo. Landing and taking off is a breeze, the app is smooth, it flies predictably and fast, and return to home is incredibly precise (if you can get a GPS lock that is). I will hopefully update this review, if I can, once the gimbal has been released and 3DR releases another firmware update. I'm really hoping for the best, but this might just be the risk of buying a first gen product.

Excellent for Drone Pilots! Posted by: from: on Excellent Drone for overall pilots, you feel amazed when you open the box and see a series of steps on getting your Solo ready to fly. I only charged the battery, but on the props, took it to a nice open field outside the city, GPS signal took like 2 min to acquire and I was in the air, it's amazing! Finally some use for my GoPro, just attached it to the gimbal and got some kickass video, smarshots make everything simpler and really helps you get the job done, everything is so simple to use such as the cablecam mode, orbit mode, even the selfie and follow me mode (warning: will get you lots of Fb likes, so be ready). Overall amazing product!

Glad I went with this over other platforms Posted by: from: on I have flown smaller toy grade quadcopters for about a year to learn flight orientation basics etc. before getting a unit of this caliber. Initially, I was drawn to the DJI platform, but after some research found this machine to be superior. For the current sale price, I firmly believe that if you already own a compatible gopro, this is the best quadcopter on the market. Despite the reviews commenting on gps lock time etc...I have never experienced any of these issues, and think it most likely amounts to operator error/misunderstanding. This is not a toy, and should not be a quick take out and fly sort of system. Appropriate pre-flight checks, maintenance, and environmental awareness should be top priorities. If a 2 minute gps lock time is an issue, I suggest reconsidering this hobby.

So Far So Good Posted by: from: on I received this on the 6/17 and have flown it a handful of times out in large fields to get a good feel of the drone. It has worked as advertised thus far for me. I have used some of the advanced features such as follow me, selfie, orbit without any hiccups. RTH and Pause have also worked perfectly. The range seems adequate since legally you are not supposed to fly the drone out of your FOV. ** I have been reluctant to fly it over water or in an area that could have GPS interference. I have read some horror stories on the forums regarding GPS issues. The App has worked perfectly for me without any crashes or errors. I was using my Iphone 6. 3DR supposedly has an update in the works for these issues and I am going to hold off flying until the update just to be safe. All in all I would recommend this.I think it will get better as time goes on and the bugs are worked out and more accessories become available. (very disappointed that the gimbal and backpack were delayed)

Good for beginner not for distance Posted by: from: on Beautiful product and great for learning drone basics and it does have some advanced features. Smart shots work well. However my hang up for me its weak GPS connectivity and weak controller distance. Battery was good. App is inferior to DJI. I returned and purchased DJI Phantom 3 Professional and I'm much happier. It had all I needed for less. If you have a GoPro you might like Solo. Do your own research. I think 3DR will come along but they are not there yet. Side note, GoPro video normally requires more post edit thean other especially if you do not like fisheye. Just an FYI.

Super easy to fly Posted by: from: on I would give the Solo 5 stars if the gimbal was released at the same time. It's a must have for drones since any video without a gimbal is unusable. That said this drone is very easy to fly and looks great. GPS acquisition can take a few minutes, but it makes it very easy to fly and maneuver. I've never owned or flown a RC quad and yet I feel comfortable flying this thing high up in the skies. It's expandability makes it future proof so you won't be left in the dark months or even years later. It's more expensive than DJI and I did consider the phantom 3 pro, but it's camera can't be upgraded and it doesn't have all the smart shots that makes the Solo more dynamic in aerial cinematography. Plus I've heard and read that their customer service have been much easier to deal with than DJI's. Overall, I'm satisfied with this purchase and the gimbal will bump this review to 5 stars.
