Q: the 4 ports usb works without the power plugged in. so what is the power for ???
A: The power cord can be used always or only when you have a lot of USB devices that draw too much for your computer. Basically if it works OK without the cord then you don't need it. However, if you start having issues then plug in the cord for more power and less drain from your computer.
Q: What is output current for each port?
A: It will handle charging an iPhone 5 while a G-Drive and an Ultra Slim WD are attached. However, it will not charge one iPad Retina. It's important to note that this doesn't have an external power supply. Very compact. So its main duty is for plugging in multiple USB 3.0 (or 2.0). Again, though, it does charge my iPhone 5 no problem.
