I've been a big fan of Lord of the Rings for a really long time, and I was waiting patiently for this blu-ray release for years. I have absolutely nothing to say that I am not pleased with. The quality of the box, covers, etc.. is just amazing. The movies could NOT be better. The picture is absolutely beautiful, clear, the balance of colors are great. The sound is, so far, the best I've heard on Blu-ray movies. If you have a good 5.1 home theather set, you will be surprised. I've heard some people complaining about having the movies splited in two discs, as well not having the option of watching the standard edition with this same set. First, we should know that the movies were released now with no compression in every aspect (picture and sound), and that's why the quality could not be better. If the producers decided to split in two discs, the reason is of course it wouldn't fit in a single one. This is not a two-hour long standard movie... let's not forget this. And believe me: you wouldn't watch the whole thing without having at least one break (bathroom, drink etc). Then, the moment of switching discs in the middle of the movie becomes very welcome. If you have to choose between best quality and not switching discs, which one would you take? No, you cannot watch the standard edition of LOTR with this set. Why not? Because the entire movie has been re-edited for the extended edition. It is not just an inclusion of a few extra scenes. Sometimes, it feels you are watching a whole new movie! Even the soundtrack had been changed in order to adjust to the new extended scenes. If you want to watch the standard edition, go and buy it too. But after watching these extended ones, I doubt you would ever want to be close to the standard again...

Most of the 'gift with purchase' incentives that I see with DVD & BluRay purchases do not interest me. So-so t-shirts or hats, bobbleheads or posters. But this was interesting enough to get my attention and make me pre-order the BluRay set. It's not all that elaborate, and I don't know if I would have bought one for a separate souvenir purchase. But it's a fun keepsake and a rather close replica of the One Ring. Unlike the group from the "Big Bang Theory" episode, I won't have to fight anyone over it, either!

A free product with the blu-ray preorder ^.^ It was definitely worth buying, i'll tell you that. However, the gold coating is REALLY thin so i would recommend coating the ring with something, i used clear nail polish, upon opening.
