Posted by: CycleCoach from Burlington, VT on 04/23/2013In relatively open terrain with fully charged batteries I was unable to get more than 1.8 miles as the crow flies (using Google maps distance calculator). This might be fine for a ski area or similar use where separation might be 1 mile, but not for communicating between bicycles on a road ride where separation between riders could easily be 5 miles (15-20 minutes of riding).

Worked great when driving with two cars together

Posted by: camerr from Post Falls Idaho on 05/10/2012Overall it served it's purpose for us. The range was clear when used, but after 6 hours needs to be charged, so be sure to charge if you are going to use each day. It's a bit pricey for what you get.

Doesn't live up to it's claims

Posted by: monkeyhumpdance from Yucaipa, CA, USA on 12/28/2011Bought these to use on our family road trip. We were in the desert with no obstructions and they stopped working with only less than a 1/4 mile distance between the two radios. They claim to have up to a 27 mile range. I called Motorola and they claim that they won't work in a vehicle. That a vehicle blocks their usefulness and range. I find that hard to believe. I've used them in other scenerios where there were large obstructions and didn't have much of a problem.

Great when they work

Posted by: Erz327 from Tampa,FL on 12/13/2011I purchased 2 sets of these ( total of 4 radios ) for our business. They are nice looking have have many features that our old units don't have.
The good :
- Units are nice looking.
- Clear voice
- Great range
- Comes with desktop charger and belt clip.
- Built in flash light.
The bad :
-Maybe I got a bad batch but all of our units stop transmitting radio by themselves ( They turn off while in use )
It is not the battery and I know this because when the radio cuts off the screens turns off as well but if you press the flashlight button the light turns on. You'd have to turn the volume dial all the way to turn it off and back on again to get radio signal and to get the screen to display.
I purchased the extended plan so I will be going back to BestBuy to exchange these and hopefully I can come here and change the " bad " section of this review.

They work well, no problems at all

Posted by: itzsm00th from Cypress, CA on 01/15/2011I used these on vacation recently with family and they worked really well. We used them on a six hour road trip with pretty regular chatter and the sound quality was very good. Only lost 1 of 3 bars on the battery life as well. Has plenty of features. I recommend getting the FCC license to use the GMRS channels if you need more range, otherwise the FRS channels will work fine in shorter distances. As always, you will never achieve the theoretical rated distance capability of any radio. I have not tried this radio over a half mile range on the FRS channel but I had no issues using these radios within these conditions. Got my FCC GMRS license but have not tried GMRS channels yet for testing.

Good for the Price

Posted by: sootsie from Brownsburg, IN on 03/29/2010I purchased these last fall for use at work. We have a three story concrete building. My other radios of various manufacturers can barely make it from the first floor to the basement. These can broadcast clearly through two floors of concrete. I have tested them from indoors to my car while traveling and have been able to transmit 1 mile. I am not crazy enough to believe that I would get 27 miles. Remember that the max range is measured from a mountain top to a point somewhere in a clear valley (Seriously thats how it is done on all radios.) But for my purposes these radios work geat. I have Unidens, Midlands, and Cobra's, and Motorola is by far the best. Having said this, the 10 Mile Motorolas may be nice for kids in the backyard to call into the house but these are much better. Don't waste your money on anything below twenty miles; you'll be glad you spent the extra dollars.
