Posted by: fdsboston from Boston on 04/13/2013Great camera. Got it on clearance at bestbuy. All the controls are on the body, and you don't have to dig through the menus to get to them like on the cheaper bodies. D5x00 series uses the same or better sensor, but D90has CLS and built in lens motor. This is not the camera to shoot videos, though

I've owned this for a few years...

Posted by: AubreysOma from East Coast on 11/20/2012My first Nikon was a D40 which I outgrew quickly. I've been using the D90 for a few years now and may upgrade to the D7000. I say "may" because what counts as much as what camera you use is the eye behind the camera. The D90 is a great mid-range camera. I have had several D90 shots on exhibition. My battery lasts a good 1000 shots before needing recharging.

Next Step from beginner

Posted by: Brian97 from Missoula, MT on 10/15/2012Got my camera a year and a half ago, primarily use it to photograph birds. It's great. Lots of different settings, and filters for what ever you're photographing. I like the second scroll wheel on the front. It makes it easy to adjust two settings at once.
The different flash settings are more useful than I would have ever imagined.
For a person looking to upgrade from a point and shoot (like I was) I recommend something like this. Once you get the hang of it, it's just as easy to use.

excellent camera to replace my out dated d100

Posted by: maxx76 from ft wayne, in on 07/26/2012I really like this as a replacement for my much older D 100. The menu is much easier to get thru and with the larger rear screen and zoom feature I can see if I got the shot. I do wish it had a brighter screen for outdoor viewing. My photos have been very impressive as to their clarity of focus. The active d lighting feature has really done a great job of revealing detail in the shadows. I can take one shot now and it turns out well. On my last camera I had to center the exposure meter on the area of the photo I wanted to expose for and accept the other areas as brighter or darker than I wanted. This feature just seems to be able to expose the whole scene correctly.

Posted by: Mommas from Stockton, CA on 09/20/2011I have not used it much because I'm so busy with family, school, and work. However, from what I've used it for, the quality is good. I still need to learn how to use it because all i know how to do now is point and shoot, but i will certainly find time to play around with the different settings and see what i like...

Great Upgrade from a Beginner DSLR
5
Posted by: Kevin8503 from on 04/21/2011I just got my D90 body last week, and boy do I love it. I had to replace a D60 with a hot pixel problem, so I picked up the D3100. Unfortunately I soon realized I had outgrown beginner DSLRs in general.
I looked to the mid-range Nikons, and basically it came down to the D90 and the new D7000. And as much as I'd love a D7000, there was no way I could justify paying almost double the D90 price.
It's true, the D90 is almost three years old. But it's still a lot of camera for the price. I love the added size and weight. The dual control wheels are a huge upgrade, as well as the LCD on top. And to be honest, unless you're blowing up photos to 20x30" prints, 12.3MP is plenty.
The only real advantage the D7000 has IMO is the greater ISO and low-light capabilities. The D90's ISO is comparable to the D60's, and even lags behind the D3100. However, as any good photographer will tell you, invest in better glass, not higher ISO capabilities.
To be fair, I did not get my D90 from Best Buy because they were sold out. I picked up a refurbished unit for $699 from Dodd Camera. However, I'm just impatient. Now that Best Buy has it on sale for $799, I almost wish I had waited and had gotten it new.
This is a GREAT camera. And the money you save over the D7000 would go a long way towards some great 2.8 glass. Like that NIKKOR 70-200 2.8 VR II ;)
