From a World Class Filmmaker (who clearly also happens to be a huge Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers fan) and a World Class Band. Can you imagine being Peter Bogdanovich and his crew producing and directing this film? It would be like a having wet dream! This is getting to live your life all over again as you watch Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' own professional and sometimes personal lives unfold on the screen. How many people get grow up watching the Beatles on TV then go on to not only become BIGGER than them but also gets to actually record music with a couple of them. What would it be like sitting in the studio with George Harrison and Ognir Rrats (a.k.a. - Ringo Starr)? How many people get to actually live "RUNNIN' Down the DREAM"? This of course is a MUST HAVE for any fan of music! You get to see and feel the passion of an average everyday ordinary group of guys reach the pinnacle of their profession with unimaginable succes. You'll be captivated for the entire four hours of music, interviews, rare footage, and live concerts this gifted filmmaker painstakingly enjoyed providing for all to see. We get an inside view, the front row seats if you will, of the band' professional lives at every stage of the Heartbreakers story. Steve Ferrone was clearly the missing link. He instantly made Heartbreakers a much better band the moment he walked in the door. He deserves recognition for his incredible contribution to this band. I need to correct a previous review, so please allow me. To Udey Hussein who wrote a review on 10/20/2007, to quote him, "The included concert is a superb finale to the Heartbreaker's career and is an awesome experience.". What finale? By ANY means this wasn't a finale to TP & the Heartbreakers! They've only just begun, the final chapter hasn't even been written. You should just wish you were among the priviledged few, okay a few MILLION, who actually have been fans for the entire 30 years of TP & the Heartbreakers. This set is something we'll all savor for generations to come!

My mother purchased this for me for my birthday in early 2008. At the time, I enjoyed Petty and the Heartbreakers but they weren't one of my favorites. I am a music fan in general and all I can say is 'WOW!" Everything about this set is fantastic...the length, the quality, the diversity in the media. I've watched the concert DVD over and over and keep the bonus CD in my vehicle for long drives. I always watch the 4-hour documentary in one sitting, and it never gets boring. Even some of my friends who aren't particularly into TP&H enjoyed this set. I thought the DVDs might be good, but I didn't expect it to touch me so emotionally. I went out and bought a few more TPH albums the next day and became an instant fan. If you can find this, I would recomment going out and buying it. At one point, I let someone borrow this set and thought I'd never see it again..so I tried to order another copy and they had discontinued the 4-disc version (lowered the price and brought it down to just 2-discs) If you can get this full version, buy it!

This is one of the BEST career documentaries I have ever seen. Completely rivals and can stand next-to The Last Waltz. I was completely impressed by the willingness of Director Peter Bogdanovitch to keep himself out of it and allow Tom Petty to tell his own story. Petty shows a willingness to reveal his strengths, weaknesses, his mistakes, and above all his love of the music. Also evident was the importance of his vision to keep the band as one cohesive unit, which explains their lasting thirty years together. The included interviews and comments with other musicians, such as Eddie Vedder, gives a real glimpse of the respect for Petty's contribution to music. The accompanying 30th Anniversary Concert DVD and song-mix CD are added bonuses that will be enjoyed over and over. I truly felt after watching and listening that Tom Petty was having as much fun as I was, probably more. Best Buy gets kudos for offering this gem, and their shipping time was Excellent, as usual. This belongs in your archives.

It may well be more information about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers than you are willing to store for long, or deep. But it's well worth a watch. Even more than one. The two DVD documentary has plenty of great rock n roll 'story'. American kids doing what so many American kids did since the establishment of the Great 28. It has enough of family and background that you have a strong feeling of knowing the subjects, who then continue to grow in ways expected and unusual. Tragedy and loss are not strangers to any of us. Dealt with here straight from hip and heart. A human story, thoroughly. The music is what will get the most repeated use. The CD is going to please any fan, any!, and the DVD concert footage is one of my faves to watch of any of my rock video. I like the package, the look, the contents.. and I've become an even bigger fan.

I actually caught some of this DVD on Cable a good while back but since my wife is a huge Tom Petty fan and having recently seen the group live on the Mojo Tour I ordered this compangion Book along with the DVD Box set for her 50th B-day and I was compelety blown away by both!! I have to say how brillanly I thought the Images was restored and how tastefully the entire book was put together! The best part about this box-set is you don't even have to be a Tom Petty Fan to get this book. All you need to be is a fan of the arts and you'll be blown away and STILL come out a TP Fan! You should get it while you can though as they're no longer manufacturing this set and I'd bet berfore too much longer this one's gonna a be tough find -even on Ebay... -P Brown Keyboardist/Producer Ocean Soul Studios
