A: It would seem that the end with 3 black rings should be in the music device, and the end with 2 black rings goes into the headphones. The 3rd ring on the device end is for a microphone input. Since the cord has a mic built into the cable, the mic wire only needs to go from the mic to the device (i.e. phone, tablet). The headphone end of the cable only needs 2 rings (left and right audio), because when using the cable, the microphone on the cable serves as the only mic input. -3 ring --> phone, tablet, laptop -2 ring --> headphones
Q: Would these headphones be good for gaming?
A: Yes, they can be used for gaming. They have a built in mic allowing for voice chat in multiplayer games.
A: Are you sure you have the sound adjusted on your playing device as well as on the earphones? Or are they defective? Mine definitely has a wide range of volumes, and I am hard of hearing in both ears. Base and treble are well adjusted.
Q: How do these compare to the wired Beats?
A: Sound about the same. Beats are VERY over rated (you are paying basically for the name) and have WAY TOO much bottom end to the EQ curve. If you listen to rap or hip hop, then you will like both both these and the Beats will be fine. If you want a more flatter, natural sound, go for a more 'pro' set of headphones from Sennheiser or Audio-Technica. My advice is to buy headphones with a FLAT EQ profile and adjust the EQ to your liking with your device so that you can use them to listen to all styles of music instead of being locked into one sound.
