From the director of Moon
Duncan Jones is definitely a rising star in directing. He's only made two movies, and both of them are fantastic. They have their flaws, but he clearly knows what he's doing if you've ever seen the movie Moon.
There's really only one complaint I have about this movie and that's why I gave it four instead of five stars. The plot is interesting and keeps you interested, however, the major plot twist of the movie is easy to figure out. I figured it out within 15-20 minutes of the movie. It didn't necessarily destroy my enjoyment of it, but when the twist came it was just kind of "meh." Regardless of that, it's still a good movie.
The acting is great, especially coming from Jake Gyllenhaal, and partially redeems himself in my eyes for that awful Prince of Persia movie. Michelle Monaghan also does a great job in her roll and I liked that her character wasn't necessarily trusting like female leads always tend to be.
The cinematography is also great in this movie. Considering the plot and how the story plays out, it could've easily been detrimental to the film considering you have to capture the same areas multiple times, so keeping it interesting and changing up how you film each sequence shows Duncan Jones ability as a director. He also uses some nice camera tricks to make the same explosion over the duration of the film look cool each time and it's always from a different type of shot.
I went into this movie with high expectations and they were met for the most part. Definitely check this movie out when you get tired of all the dreary films in theatre. It isn't totally original, and I wish Clint Mansell had done the score, but it's still very good.
