OK speaker for outside, but only at a sales price!

This speaker wasn't what most reviews I've came across had explained for the sound quality. Maybe I've became spoiled from starting off with the the JBL charge 2 speakers, which I regret selling them to get this, thinking I would get a little more while they were on sale.
-The build quality is solid, though the rubber protective cover fills like it wants to roll of the plastic housing. The speakers are covered with a metal grill guard, and the ports have a thick rubber cover to give them a water tight seal
-When you power on the unit, it doesn't yell at you "Powering on!, Welcome to Altec Lansing!", and "You are now pared, enjoy!", as loud as the MiniH20. I REALLY love the feature when you hold down the volume up or down button it skips the track, and if you press the power button (not hold) it will pause and play the music (something I wish JBL did with charge 2). This feature helped bypass the need to unlock my phone every time I wanted to skip songs.
-Now for sound, the speakers are powerful but it's the enclosure that the they're in, is what I think, are hindering it's potential. Because of the purpose for what these were designed for, the speaker is a completely sealed unit to give it that water proof, dust proof capability, and therefore, prevents low ends from airing out to give some nice bass tones. It has a very punchy bass because of this, and the speaker drivers are very treble heavy, it's hard to get a good sound out of it if you sit and listen. The speakers also seem to project in a narrow path in front of it and not really fill the area it's in with sound. I found that part to be annoying since I use this at work and move around my desk, that's were I notice there was a sweet spot to hear them correctly. Even with an equalizer, I still couldn't get the right low's and mid's.
-The speaker is great strictly for outdoor use, with some ok sound quality, that's able to charge your phone. It's also awesome to change tracks without getting your phone out in wet environments. Only good if you get it on sale, but for the sound, not worth the $200 price tag. Will be going with the JBL Charge 2+ instead.

Quit charging after 1 week
Posted by: RyanT from: on
I wish I could review with 5 stars. The speaker works great and fits what I was looking for perfectly. I was pumped to find a speaker that sounded as good as this one with the portable features this device has. But after one week of in home use it will not charge when plugged in. The reviews on here are mostly positive but there are several who have had charging issues and I am one of them now. Highly dissappointed after spending the amount of money this thing costs. Guess I'll find how well the return policy is.

Great speaker at first
Posted by: GarrettF from: on
Works great sounds great about a week into owning it, it would be fully charged or nearly full and it would randomly turn itself off while playing music, it wasn't turned up too loud or anything so it couldn't be the voltage going too low for it to stay on. Must of had something internally wrong when made or something because I never dropped or damaged it whatsoever

I had been hesitant of purchasing as we were looking for something that would live up to our active lifestyle that would provide a good quality sounds. This is the perfect little speaker. While it did take longer then it should have to pair with my ipad - after I turned it off and back on it had no issues. Also, just a piece of advice, be sure to check your volume on the ipad or iphone as well as our volume was turned lower on the ipad, but the speaker was all the way up so it took us a few minutes to realize why it was not as "loud" as we experienced in the store. We've taken this speaker outside now on numerous occasions and the battery seems to be holding up well. In addition to us not worrying about the outside conditions where we bring the speaker, its great as we have kids and aren't needing to hold our breath each time they go to adjust the volume, fall and break. For anyone with an active lifestyle, kids, or even those that are clumsy, this is a great product!

Durable and Dependable, with High Quality Sound
Posted by: Coltster from: on
I purchased my Altec-Lansing Boomjacket from Best Buy about 4 weeks ago. Thus far my experience with the speaker has been great. It has very good general performance as a speaker, featuring high sound quality & volume for its size, easy Bluetooth connectivity, and options to control volume & change songs from either the device or the speaker itself. The speaker also features an incredible battery life. Although I haven’t tested this strictly yet, it claims a 40 hour battery life off of 4 hours of charge time. It has a bank of slots on the back beneath a rubber seal that allows for USB connection to charge devices, auxiliary cord port for media as an alternative to Bluetooth, and of course the port for the charger.
The most central selling point of this product is, of course, the durability. The product claims to be waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, and even floats. Even though it has only been a month, I’ve put this product through its paces in terms of durability. It has been dropped from several different heights up to 2 meters without aftereffects. I’ve used it each day in my bathroom, exposing it to light steam and water without a second thought. The biggest challenge I’ve put the Boomjacket through is the steam room at my local gym. I use the steam room in 2 15-minute sessions, up to 5 times per week over the past 4 weeks. The speaker has been present each and every time, being exposed to high temperatures, significant water accumulation, and very large volumes of steam. The seals work perfectly and have remained watertight each and every time, with the speaker giving great sound through and through. The speaker even comes with a specialty mount, allowing connection with multiple types of vehicles and equipment for nearly any type of environment, be it snow, rain, open water, mud, rocks, or otherwise.
This product is prime for people of all ages with active lifestyles. It’s best used to its full potential when being put through the abuse of various environments. Be it activities in mud, snow, water, or any other abusive terrain, the Boomjacket finds its full potential while pumping out your favorite jams through thick and thin. Mount it on an ATV, snowmobile, boat, side-by-side, or anything else that may be your flavor, the possibilities are nearly unlimited.
Although this product’s main purpose is to provide maximum durability with relatively high quality sound, it also features a fairly attractive design. It’s offered in 3 eye-catching colors: cool gray, blue, and red (like my own), all accented with the black rubber exo-cover. It’s a smooth unit with few seams and few spots for weakness. I give this product a 4.5/5 stars instead of 5/5 only because I haven’t had it for an extended period of time as of yet, and because its sound quality & volume only fall short when in comparison to more expensive, far less durable speakers on the market (Bose, Polk, Memphis, wtc.). The Boomjacket has a purpose and it goes above and far beyond its goal.

Great rugged outdoor speaker
Posted by: Sportsnut314 from: on
I really put this speaker to the test immediately after purchasing it. I got a full charge on the battery which only takes 4 hours... not bad for a 40 hour battery life! Then our first outing was to the beach in Florida on the Gulf of Mexico side... the Gulf is very loud, and this speaker had no issues over powering that sound to deliver true clear music. Definitely worth the $199 I paid for it.

Hear this before you buy
Posted by: AFProud from: on
I would like to consider myself by no means a "speaker geek" or have no ear for speaker quality at all. But I have found this speaker to be the worst thing I have ever listened to. In every single one of my songs I trial ran (country, pop, hip hop, 80's rock) the volume automatically rises and falls on its own (its the worst thing ever). The bass sounds like a dying flatulence (not even kidding). Unless you are 100 years old and can't hear anything at all, I would highly recommend purchasing something else. A Pro is that it is highly durable and water proof, so when you throw it off Mount Everest or sink it to the bottom of the ocean I promise it will sound the same! Seriously, I am no expert on quality of speakers, don't get this its terrible. Don't make the same mistake I did. Good luck mate.

Great Speaker for outdoor adventures!
Posted by: Jesterdidit from: Northern, VA on
I don't do a lot of reviews, but wanted to take the time to say how great this speaker is. Bought it for a camping trip to have some tunes, without lugging a larger system around. With it being water proof, decided to take it with us on the raft as well.
Well I can say it held up to the waterproof test! It floats! It kept playing underwater for a good 2 minutes, and has worked great since.
It also puts out a reasonably good quality sound and can get rather loud for such a little speaker.

I own one of these and bought another one 6 months later for my in-laws to use at their pool at home. Also bought the smaller version for my nephew. This speaker is perfect for the pool or when we go tubing. The battery can last a really long time, it can easily handle an all day use. The speaker sounds good. Nice and clear with no distortion, has a decent amount of bass. You can't adjust the treble or bass on this unit, but I don't consider that a downfall. It's pretty durable. Ive dropped it on cement, in sand, and in mud and it's held up fine. Pairs with Bluetooth easily and I've gotten up to 30 feet away from the unit while it was paired to my phone and it didn't skip a beat. Took it tubing a few weeks ago and strangers where impressed that it floats and you can sink it under the water, pull it back out and it works and sounds fine. Keep it in my car cause I never know when I'll use it next. Get it, you'll love owning this thing.
