Shutting down randomly after new APC batteries Posted by: from: Vegas on I currently own 7 APC UPS's. Three of them are this particular top-end model. I use two for my main system. The CPU box is on one and my three monitors are on the other one. They worked fine for about 8 months then started saying the batteries needed to be replaced. So, I ordered and replaced the batteries, which cost a fortune. Within a week, all three units started shutting off randomly. I'm working on something and boom - they just turn off, which has already cost me my primary raid array. I had to replace the drives because the frequent power-off during drive access ruined them. I used to swear by APC power products, but I'll never buy them again. First, they bend you over on the replacement battery prices. Second, they just don't work after the batteries are replaced. I've spent literally thousands on APC units which no longer work, and I'm done. I've used them for decades. I don't know what happened to them, but I don't trust them anymore. BUYER BEWARE!!

Worth The Money Posted by: from: Bel Air on Ive had this Surge Protector/Battery Backup for about 6 months now and am very glad that I had made this purchase and spent the extra money for this specific one. I connect many things to this device -Desktop -Monitor -Laptop -USB HUB -Desk Lamp -Printer -PogoPlug Having this device has brought about many positives for instance: 1.) Saves Power- turns off monitor, USB HUB, and printer when desktop is powered off or put on sleep. 2.) Protects my many devices from my unstable power throughout the house 3.) Keeps me going even when the power goes out due to storms, ect. Even with everything plugged in I can still be on the comp working for about another 30-60min depending on what I'm doing. Other thinks I like about device: - Sleek design - Small menu screen on front of device which is nice added touch - Much quieter then many other battery backups Ive used when the power goes out. - Relative small size and fits beneath my desk - Program that comes along with device to monitor/test device Overall very satisfied. If your looking for something that Is going to protect you and keep you up and running after the lights go out look into this battery backup / surge protector. Worth the price tag.

Only problem is fan noise Posted by: from: Central Florida on Got one of these on sale recently. I have used many BR1500LCD's at work and thought the only difference in this model would be the green features for power saving. Not so. My application was in a media center location and the fan on this model is designed to run even while on A/C power. The noise generated by the fan is unacceptable in this type of application. According to APC support "the Fan in the unit, will always Runs, this is not an issue. The BX1500G went through a design change in which it was decided to switch to a different fan and to keep the fan on all the time. This means the fan will run while the unit is plugged in, whether on or off. This is to help reduce heat at the internal components, increasing service/battery life." In my experience the fan ran when the load was around 250 watts or higher and once it kicked on it stayed on until the PC was shut down. If the load was lower than that threshold at boot the fan did not start but if it got higher during operation it kicked on and stayed on. It is loud and annoying when trying to watch movies or tv. APC agreed to RMA it for a BR1500LCD. According to APC support the fan on this model only runs when 1.Tthe ups is on battery, 2. The UPS is charging the battery. 3. The UPS has a load greater than 75%. 4. The internal temperature of the UPS has reached greater than 140 degrees F (60 degrees C). In my experience I have had these models at 500 watts and never heard the fan at all. I have never heard them during charging, battery usage or any other time. If you need a quiet ups stay away from the XS series (BX model numbers).

dependable Posted by: from: on my 6-year-old APC UPS died suddenly. i had to replace it immediately! the only store open at that hour that would be likely to have something was Best Buy. they had 2 manufacturers. the other company's units looked less sturdy w/ too much plastic & not enough vents. since i had good luck with my old unit, & since a member of the Geek Squad told me he only uses Schneider UPS units, i felt very comfortable replacing it with a similar unit. while i was in the store i read a few reviews. they were positive regarding this unit & brought up problems with the competitor. that also helped swing the pendulum. i like the idea that this unit has a larger capacity than my old one. i'm hoping that means it will last even longer. as soon as i got it home, i hooked up all the cords & plugged it in. it went right to work & has been totally fine ever since -- as i expected. my computer & peripherals are showing no signs of electrical issues. i'm happy!

The Best Investment for Your Home Office Posted by: from: Near New York City on Despite its large size, the APC Back-UPS XS 1500 is an essential for any home office with connected electronics that would benefit from continuous power (such as a desktop computer (Mac or PC)). While the price may be a bit much when compared to a general surge protector, this unit provides uninterrupted power that can happen during a power fluctuation or a complete power outage. I recall a few years ago experiencing a power outage that had the power going out, then on, then out, then on, etc. for approximately 10 minutes. There was not enough time to do any work on my Mac. When I switched to my Macbook during that event, the power to my modem and Airport made it impossible to access the Internet. Don't fool yourself into believing that it would never happen to you. This investment really is worth the price and the internal battery can be replaced. Along with the product, you get a generous 3-year warranty (that includes the unit and the battery). In addition, you get a working unit out of the box. For PC users, you need to download additional software from the APC website. For Mac users, you already have the software built-in. To access the UPS, just open System Preferences, Energy Saver -- a UPS tab will appear in the dialog box, so click that to access the features that you can configure. Under Shutdown Options, you can configure your Mac when to perform a proper shut-down operation. This unit should be compatible with every Mac out there -- from a tiny Mac Mini to a powerful Mac Pro -- you are covered. Just be sure to connect the supplied USB cable into your Mac and you are all set. I want to add that this unit runs very quiet and the display shows many interesting things about the voltage, the input and output wattage, the battery time, charge level, load capacity and so much more. The power saving features are LCD and Surge-Only outlets. Some of the outlets will power down when your Mac or PC goes into sleep, standby or shut-down (completely configurable) to conserve power and save you money on your monthly energy bill. In conclusion, the APC Back-UPS XS 1500 makes a great investment for your home office and makes a great gift. Best Buy has a generous return policy that makes this product review possible. Two Bad Units from Two Different Batches Posted by: from: Hanover MD on I've tried two of these units in a row, and they both failed within a couple of days. The failure process was the same as others have seen: The unit works fine at first, for about a day, then starts beeping. Other than the beeping, there's no immediate indication of a problem, even if you cycle through the displays on the unit. If you keep an eye on the unit over the next day or so, you'll notice that the battery meter gets lower and lower, despite the fact that the household power is on (as evidence of that, the non-battery backup outlets of the unit continue to supply power). Once the battery meter gets to zero, the battery backup outlets no longer function, and the unit reports the F5 and F6 failures. Note that the non-battery backup outlets continue to function, providing you with a very expensive surge suppressor, and that's what I'm using until delivery of my newly ordered Cyberpower unit. I'm fairly sure the two APC units I tried were from different batches, as one had a manual that was in English only, and the other had a manual with multiple languages. I don't know if APC has just designed a bad unit, or has started using cheap parts that fail under load, though I suspect the latter. It's a shame, as I have an older 1500VA APC unit that I've had for more than five years, which is still going strong on its original battery.

Unfortunately Dead on Arrival Posted by: from: on I have another one I purchased 2 years ago and works flawlessly. Unfortunately, this one Dead on Arrival. I did not have time to install immediately and waited over 3 weeks before opening the box. One needs to open the battery cage and turn the battery (clear instructions) to change battery from disconnected state to connected state (as I have done in other APC UPS). However, it appears the battery of the unit is faulty and never charged. I still have the unit, no box, return date is over. Basically wasted money on this device. I bought a competitor product as I needed one, plugged in, just worked unlike APC. I have the dead device cannot return. It is very disappointing as APC used to be the company I trust and used to really test the unit prior shipping. No longer the case. The unit is made in China.

BEWARE IF USING WITH NEW DELL XPS 9000 SYSTEMS Posted by: from: on This seems like a great unit...and I'm sure it probably is, but it does NOT work with new Dell XPS 9000 computers. These new computer need a true "sine wave" which is ONLY available with the APC SMART backup systems. I wish I would have know this first. I spent HOURS with Dell and APC tech support to figure this out. The WORST part is every time it would "self test" the battery it was the same thing as pulling the plug on the computer when it was turned on. This is exactly what I was trying to prevent and why I bought the unit. APC SHOULD list if a common computer system is NOT compatible before the consumer buys it!!!!

Short Shelf Life for Batteries & Wrong Serial No. Posted by: from: on Just purchased this on 22 Feb 2015. Factory test sheet is dated 10/04/2014. After allowing unit to fully charge for 18 hrs and following all the instructions, the unit shows the batteries need to be replaced. Fails self-test, changed the battery date - same problem. Ran self test from the unit as suggested by tech support and it fails. Tech support is sending new unit since they do not have any replacement batteries in stock. Tech support said these batteries only have a 6 month shelf life. Nothing on the box indicates the date of manufacture so you can't tell how old the batteries inside may be. Perhaps they need to indicate that on the box if the shelf life is only 6 months as stated. Additionally, you may want to verify that the serial number printed on the bag label that holds the cables and instructions actually match the serial number on the bottom of the unit or the serial number that shows in the PowerChute software. Mine didn't and I registered it with the wrong serial number. I've used APC products for many years and not had any major problems so I can't say this is a typical experience. Everyone is cutting costs and perhaps these "new" batteries aren't what they should be.

Don't buy Posted by: from: Miami, FL on The APC website recomended a less expensive model - I upgraded to this "better" model. But, It did not support my computer when I pulled the plug from the wall. My computer shut down and restarted in "Secure Mode" after an improper shut-down. An APC technician tested the unit by phone and said it was "working properly", then sent me a long email explaining why this model would not work with my new Dell XPS Core i7 "high-powered" computer. APC said I needed a "Smart UPS" costing $300+. So, I unplugged this APC to return to Best Buy and plugged in my old $50 UPS, a Conext 500 bought in 2001. Guess what?? It worked perfectly with my new "high-powered" computer. LESSON? Don't buy this APC UPS - it doesn't work normally, and it's expensive. Save money & go for a less expensive brand and model !!
