Q: would this be a good beginner laptop?
A: No. This is in no way a "beginner" laptop. If you or your graduate is an obsessed gamer with money to burn, this is a possible choice. Otherwise, this machine is total overkill and a needless expense. I own it. I LOVE it. It's a terrific high tech pastry of fun and productivity. But I wanted the power because I edit long videos and play games on high settings. I needed something super bright, and I'm used to high end graphics (I have 3GB 970M with a 250 GB 850 evo SSD). And even for me this is more than I need. Also, I knew the weight of the thing (8.8 lbs) would kill me, but I went with it anyway, and got an Everki titan bag to carry it -- when I'm well rested and have good shoes on. This is wonderful computer. But a good beginner PC laptop (as of May 2016) is $299 to $699, no matter how much disposable cash one may be trying to dispose of. It weighs less than 5 or 6 lbs, it has 4 GB of RAM (or 8), a 500 GB hard drive (5400 rpm is fine) and does NOT need a dedicated graphics card. If you want to step up a notch, go to 8 GB RAM, and either a 1TB hard drive, or an SSD (depending on whether you want storage space or quickness). Or you could do BOTH of those upgrades and buy more storage, too, for less money than a high end gaming machine.
Q: reagarding ram slots and hard drive slot
A: Well you have 2 easy to reach slots for RAM, 1 screw gets you to them. They are empty and I believe support 16gb RAM modules. This same screw gets you to the laptops only 2.5" harddrive slot and two m.2 SSD slots.
Q: Am i able to add an M2 NVMe SSD to this? Manual says no but their website implies you can...
A: You can install an M.2 SSD but it MUST be PCI express. SATA based M.2 SSD will NOT work.
A: You are going to see people saying that the hardware has failed, but on new devices it is usualy only 5% of them that are bad, and even then it is usualy something fixable like a hard drive. Pieces of the hinges breaking are common in all laptops, because most are cheap plastic, however as long as you aren't too rough with it, they can last for a long time. One of the other things that people were complaining about was the computer locking up often, however, out of the box you should not have that problem, and most problems like that are caused by software like one drive. I would take the risk on the laptop, as all laptops have these problems, and if any problem arises you could always bring it in to best buy under the warranty to fix it.
Q: If I would like both a gaming and work computer is this a computer for me?
A: Be sure you are prepared to download basic office software, as it seems focussed on gaming essentials and does not come with office nor did it print wirelessly easily for me. Lastly, be sure you can access basic programs you wish to use, like dvd playback software as it doesn't come peloaded able to play those either! Lol
A: Yes, this powerful laptop will do it all including all that you asked for. This Asus ROC Gaming laptop is head to head with Dell's Alien Ware laptop that gives you all the power and capability you'll need.
Q: Can this laptop plat SkyForge really well
A: Yes, it will be able to run and play Skyforge on high or ultra settings. It meets the system requirements to run the game.
A: It should handle your cad software without any problems. You can upgrade to 64gb ram but two slots are not easily accessed, so you will need to remove the back panel as well to access these slots.
