Great Product Posted by: from: on Overall great product for the money. The GTX 970m is a great mobile gpu. You will be able to achieve decent frame rates at 1080p. The keyboard on this laptop is also quite good as is the track pad. One of the reasons I chose this laptop is the form factor. It is not giant and bulky but it has the performance to game. And if you want you can always hook it to an external monitor. Now for my few complaints. For 1199.00 I would expect at least a 7200 rpm drive. A 5400 rpm drive is unacceptable for a laptop at this price point. Luckily you can upgrade to a ssd easily. My second complaint is the screen is a little dull and viewing angles could be better. And finally it can really be a fingerprint magnet. If you are ocd like me it will probably have you cleaning it daily. But overall this is a great laptop for gaming at a decent price.

Prepare to Drop Another $100 Posted by: from: on I am sure most of you who are reading this are drawn to the GTX 970M which is one of the most outstanding features of this laptop. It runs Total War Warhammer with ease. Another great feature is the screen which has no glare! The last laptop I had was 6 years old and glare was the most annoying thing ever. Te most negative thing about this laptop is the hard drive which is a slow slow SLOOOOWW 5400 RPM. Granted, it does lead to improve battery life over a 7500 rpm hard drive be prepared for long load times. This is why I dropped $100 for a 256 GB M.2 NGFF PCIe Gen3 x4, NVME Solid state drive SSD. After doing this I moved the OS to the SSD and now booting the laptop takes like 5 seconds. If you plan to do this make sure to buy a M2 x 3mm screw since the laptops does not come with it. Overall, a good ASUS laptop in the $1200 range, but do yourself a favor and buy a SSD and transfer the OS when you get it. It will save you a huge headache later.

Awesome Gaming Laptop; with snags Posted by: from: on Initial Review; This is an amazing laptop for the price. The 970m with the i7 are an amazing combination that do NOT disappoint for FPS on almost all major titles. Everything on the laptop makes sense, is where it should be, and is generally ergonomically well thought out. The cooling seems to do just fine, although it does seem to throttle right around 85C, but if you've ever had a gaming laptop, you know that heat is something that can't be helped. Cons/Tweaks: If you are looking at this laptop, and comparing it to other 14-15" Nvidia 970M gaming laptops, I must say that to get the best out of it, it takes some slight tweaking. Replacing the hard drive with an SSD is a must. When you do this, reinstalling windows is a breeze, fast, and gets rid of all of ASUS' bloatware. Its a win-win. There are a couple other things that are "sub-par" like the trackpad, and its not quite razer-blade thin. However, for the price, i'm not sure it can be beat. I'll leave a secondary/long term review once i've had it for a few months.

A powerful beast lurking here! Posted by: from: on I had done my homework reviewing multiple gaming laptops over the past couple of months. I even purchased a few different brands trying to obtain that perfect mobile gaming machine. A few came close however they all had one thing in common, very poor build quality especially the screen. Behold we have the Asus GL502VT gaming laptop finally! At first I was like wow this is really cool looking and oh my the orange accents are bold. Then I fired it up and was stunned at the screen quality on this machine. The colors are vibrant and pop out at you. The laptop is surprisingly light for its class and very sturdy build quality. The sound quality is above average for only having two speakers which are nicely placed on opposite sides of the trackpad. The 12GBs of DDR4 are more than adequate for getting the job done. The NVidia GTX 970M is a powerhouse for a mobile GPU. This baby delivers 120GBs of graphic bandwidth on a 192bit PCIe 3.0 bus. Plays all your games on High or Higher settings maxxed out at 1080P with ease. The only negative I would have to say is the pokey 1TB 5400rpm mechanical hard drive Asus included with this laptop. "Do yourself a favor" Swap out for an SSD HD and or M2 SSD. You will not regret. I replaced the mechanical hard drive with a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD. What a difference! Night and day, From the included screen shot I attached you can see this makes this laptop scream with performance. Boots in less than 5 seconds flat! Go grab one today and get your gaming on! You will not regret it!

Great - Except Hard Drive Posted by: from: on I am going to try provide some important information that I wish had been readily available to me without conflicting information. First, this laptop DOES have an M.2 slot that operates in PCIE 4x. I personally purchased and installed a Samsung 950 Pro, and it works beautifully after migrating the hard drive using the Samsung Migration software, but I had to remove the original HD to get it to boot. Once I format the original HD, I will reinstall it (though the battery savings using the 950 Pro may make me change my mind.) Second, Everyone is ABSOLUTELY correct. the standard hard drive for this is atrocious. It is incredibly slow, beware of purchasing this laptop if you do not intend to purchase an SSD or at least a much faster HDD. Third, this laptop CAN support up to at least 24GB of DDR4 ram, and *maybe* 40GB if/when a 32GB DDR4 single stick becomes available. There is only 1 SODIMM slot for expanding memory. I personally installed a 16GB DDR4 module, which when added to the 8 onboard gave me 24GB, which IS recognized by the motherboard, so it is not limited to 16gb as the specifications suggest. Whether it would accommodate a 32GB module, I do not know, but it seems likely. Finally, the monitor is only OK. it does get a bit washed out, and doesn't have the greatest viewing angles. Overall, a pretty good laptop that can be a really good laptop for the price if you add an SSD or M.2 drive.

Great performance with a great price Posted by: from: on The only other laptop that I can find with this size is with MSI and and Razer and their laptops are expensive. This laptop packs similar power to those with a whopping GeForce GTX 970M (or 980M if Best Buy ever sells that version). This is probably the first gaming laptop that ASUS has released with that GPU which is not 17". This GL502 ships with 12GB of RAM upgradeable to 16 GB. In my opinion, there is not a lot of reasons to run a lot of RAM. 16 is plentiful enough. I am going to complain about why they went with 12GB instead of 16GB with this, but it might be to cut costs. Anyways, 12GB is more than I need and I will just upgrade to 16GB as I see fit. They did a great job in making the laptop cool under heavy load. The front of the laptop (by the screen) does get a little hot, but that is because the vents are right there. The keyboard and the track pad do not get hot at all. The most it gets is about a slight warmth on the right side of the keyboard. Apart from that, everything else is cool. The laptop itself does get a little loud while under heavy use, but if it is just internet browsing and light activities on this laptop, it is seriously quiet. The only thing really audible is the HDD inside. The HDD is pretty slow. If it was a 7200 RPM, that would have made the laptop tons better, The 5400 RPM HDD isn't bad, but it's definitely worth upgrading to an SSD or at least keep that 5400 RPM HDD and get a M.2 PCIe SSD to make the laptop run a little faster. Apart from that, the laptop is blazing fast. The design of the laptop is fantastic. It is slick, simple, and clean. The brushed feel of the laptop is great. The speakers are good in my opinion. It's loud and it doesn't lack that much quality. It's a laptop, I don't expect all too much use from the speakers as I always use external speakers or headphones. The screen is fair. I had a G751 prior that I had to return and exchange for this due to a Quality Control issue, and the screen on the G751 looks amazing. The screen on this GL502 is a little washed out in my opinion. There could be an option to fix this, but apart from that, the screen looks great. The screen is not too washed out so gaming or watching movies on this laptop is still good. The matte is fantastic because I hate looking into a mirror when I use my laptop. The keyboard is great. Feels great to the hands, responsive, and sturdy. The trackpad is good and responsive as well, but I would have preferred separate physical buttons for left and right click. Connection to this laptop is great. I don't know what that other guy is talking about, but the GL502 that I got came with the Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 8260. It is fast and has not let me down yet. It sends and receives data without a hiccup. I have heard of some versions of this laptop shipping with a junk Atheros wireless adapter. Make sure you check which wireless adapter is in your laptop right when you purchase it. Overall, fantastic laptop. A lot of power inside a small, portable laptop. It is much more pleasant to carry this around than a G751, with that I'm sure.

Solid Gaming Laptop Posted by: from: on This is a very nice Notebook. If you're like me and looking for a fast, new gaming laptop at an affordable price, this is going to work for you. You can already read the specs so I'll just tell you what I think. Fit and Finish: Coming from a retina Macbook Pro, this comes nowhere near close. Apple just makes thinner, prettier products. That said; this is pretty decent for the price. The Aluminum pieces are nice and cool to the touch. Speed: It's fast! It may not be an 8gb 980m but it blows Xbox One and PS4 out of the water for sure. The first major game I bought to play on here was Shadow of Mordor GOTY Edition and I can just about max that out at 1080p and still get 60fps. Pretty. Display: I hear that other retailers have the model with IPS display; the one here at Best Buy doesn't. Mine has the TN panel, so it looks okay but blacks are washed out and the viewing angles (especially vertical) are atrocious. I purchased the Samsung IPS Panel from a third party and will be replacing it in a few days. The cheaper price at Best Buy combined with my rewards balance made it worth the hassle for me but if you want a nice screen, either look at a different retailer for the IPS version or be prepared to change it out like me. What's in the box: Just the notebook and charger. Nothing extra. Overall Impression: I'm happy with my purchase. I wanted an inexpensive, lightweight (relatively), and fast portable notebook, and that's just what I got. If you want something thinner or more stylish, spend double and get the new Razer Blade. I would if I wasn't on a budget ;)

Great gaming laptop for the price Posted by: from: on I'm usually not much of a reviewer, but I've thought up a list of great things and a few things that I don't like about this computer. I like: • relatively light and compact for a gaming computer • runs pretty much any game I've thrown at it on highest settings with good fps • price is really low for what you get I don't like: • could really use a SSD. I'm considering having geek squad install one in mine • mouse pad is not super responsive and kind of frustrating for those who aren't using a mouse. I prefer to have two actual buttons for clicking. Overall it has been a great computer so far. Leaps and bounds better than my old g74. I'd recommend to anyone who wants a great gaming laptop on a budget.

Using the laptop to write this review right now :) Posted by: from: on I LOVE THIS just burns through all of my games like they're leaves being burned by a flamethrower, and is very fast on startup....though not when you shut down. It is kind of slow when it starts up from a shutdown but i don't really care because it's faster than my old laptop soo :| .... It gets kind of hot on really demanding games like GTA V but its fine because the side where the WASD keys are placed are cool when it gets hot which is a pretty neat feature when you are gaming, light games run at normal temperature and light tasks are just pebbles for this laptop. I don't know why people complain about their battery life, it's fine for mine. I get 6 hours and 45 minutes when its at 97% on light tasks like surfing the web. I haven't tried gaming on battery because whoever does that is really stupid .-. ......................... All in all, this laptop is great at this price and i would recommend this laptop to all of the people i know. Yours Dankest, TonyTheDanksta

Sweet Machine hampered by sour HDD Posted by: from: McKinney, TX on This is a great laptop. That being said, main storage is a 5,400 rpm HDD installed (regardless of the Best Buy main page indicating an SSD). This really hurts the performance. On the other hand, there is an open m.2 PCI-E slot just begging to be filled with a blazing fast SSD boot drive. Once I installed the m.2 SSD, my boot time dropped from minutes, to seconds. It is a MUST HAVE upgrade. I plan on replacing the 1TB HDD at some point with a SATA SSD, but that is long term goals. The display panel is not the best, but is okay for general use, though I do not plan on doing any paid photography work using it. Other than those two drawbacks, the i7 CPU, 12 GB RAM, and 970M dedicated GPU make this machine a sweet one.
