Product was not what I was looking for Posted by: from: Northern IL on This was not what I was looking for. I was looking for a product that I could just plug into my cars to read the error codes from the car computer. This product is more of a glorified trip computer with cloud storage/access. Automatic is also unique in wanting you to have one for each vehicle you own. I tried it out for a couple of days, but the main function does not work for me. To move it from one car to another makes you go through the setup process again, which is time consuming. I finally got it setup to work with my second vehicle, and had a Check Engine light. I went into the app on my iPhone, and while the app said there was a problem, it did NOT IDENTIFY the problem to me. I then took the car to the mechanic because I needed it fixed. The fix was something I could have replaced myself and saved almost $200. I returned the product. If you are looking for a trip computer, with a lots of bells and whistles, this product might be for you. If you are looking for something to help you diagnose a problem with your vehicle, look elsewhere.

Smart device for car nerds Posted by: from: on This Automatic is the second one I've bought, I purchased the first one while it was on sale online through another site. I bought this one to go into my partner's vehicle, also on sale as the newer version came out.. This item will tell you what a Check engine light is on for, it tracks your fuel usage, monitors when you have hard accelerations & hard stops, it has crash alert (haven't had to use that!) which allows you to put in your cell # plus up to 3 emergency contacts. It also "grades" you deducting for hard accels, hard stops, and time travelling over 70 mph. You start every day at at a score of 100 and points are deducted for any of those, I'm currently after 5 days of driving at a weekly score 90 with 3 hard brakes, 4 hard accels, and 8 minutes over 70 mph, that weekly score of 90 puts me in the bottom 41% of all Automatic drivers. My original one occasionally has issues connecting to my iPhone, but it still records the trip data & adds it to the app the next time they connect. This one we've had issues where it always thinks my partner's car is low on fuel even when she's recently filled it (her fuel gauge works fine), I believe she filed a "report a problem" for that.

Better Than I Anticipated Posted by: from: on First found this as a kickstarter project a while ago. Then i quite recently i discovered the project was a success! This little OBD tool far exceeds my expections. I have been using it for a month in my little old car(2001 Nissan Altima) and the performance has been great. I get faithful and accurate readings for my commute between home and work each day, which is easily reviewed in the companion app in the Google Play store(also works on iOS). Packaging doubles as a thermos which is pretty cool. Setup was straighforward and easy, and i like the fact that if i should get into an accident the device actual captures data right up to impact, and stores it in the cloud on my account for later retrieval. When an accident occurs 911 is immediately called and a GPS location sent out to responders. My wife is also immediately notified via call and text as well. Terrific and amazing little piece of tech. I highly recommend it to car enthusaists, tech geeks like myself, or anyone for that matter who wishes to know a little more about their car's health(fuel consumption too if your car's computer chip is supported) and to feel safe in the event of an accident.

Great device but still some bugs Posted by: from: on I love the concept of the device and it does work very well. I have two of these now one in my car and another in my wife's car. The good: works with IFTTT so you an actually program functions with your automated home, cell phone and identify problems with your car before they are real problems. The interesting: the software on an iPhone still has some bugs. I can't always get the interface to detect the device. However for the most part when it doesn't detect you reboot your iPhone and it detects and downloads all missing trips so while this impacts automation it doesn't miss the logging and tracking functions. I also don't prefer the gas computations, they should allow manual entry of gas price at each fillup so it can get accurate miles/gal figures. It currently does this by a complex automatic calculation that gathers gas prices from your local home area vs. real data from fill-ups.

Great Data From Connected Vehicle Posted by: from: on I had been researching these diagnostic tools for several months, but it was on a long vacation car trip that solidified my need to purchase. We have a Chrysler Town & Country minivan with 280,000 miles and the check engine light came on. We located the nearest Best Buy and picked up an automatic to tell us what the light meant. Fortunately it was a non critical issue that we could safely wait to address. This saved us a ton of time, and allowed us to continue enjoying our vacation. The mileage and trip data is also a huge plus!

Not even CLOSE to being ready for prime-time! Posted by: from: Grand Rapids, MI on I am a serious nerd and LOVE almost all electronics, and this gadget was sure to win a spot in my Maxima. I proceeded to read everything and followed the instructions to the T! So prior to this adapter I was using a generic bluetooth adapter to check my engine lights, etc. and now with this taking the place of that $10 ebay special, I would much rather throw this one in the trash and plug in my old one that actually worked. If you like to pay to be a beta tester, than go grab this overpriced adapter that probably will end up giving you all sorts of problems... Good luck!

Easy Setup and provides great information Posted by: from: on This was easy to set up and get going companion app was free. I did go and also download an app that the system recommended for an additional 9.99 that provides even more details on the system such as battery life, emissions, speed and has very informative dashboard that helps keep my truck running great.

Informative driving Posted by: from: on The Automatic driving companion is very easy to install and connect. This device has very useful in so many ways but my most v favorite feature is the v emergency contact in case of a collision, notifying any 3 people of the accident along with paramedic notification to allow you the best possible outcome in case of injury.

Already owned one, upgraded another. Posted by: from: Michigan on The good: tracks fuel and trips, useful for mileage tracking for work The bad: does not give you access to engine data other than trouble codes. I purchased this one to replace a generation one, since that model has trouble connecting to phones reliably. I use this on the company van I work for as a backup to see when I left and how many miles traveled. I also use it on my Father's van for the same purpose for him, so he has a backup if he forgets to fill out his mileage log. I put my Gen1 unit on my personal vehicle, as I don't really care if trips are missing on that one. recommendations all come with a caveat - if you're using it for mileage tracking for work, it's great. If you're looking for something to give you access to ECM and engine data, this is not what you want.

Alternative to "OnStar" Posted by: from: on The Automatic sensor turns your car into a "smart car!" Provides audible feedback to help improve your vehicles fuel efficiency (i.e. sudden braking & acceleration, driving over 70 MPH etc.) The best part of the device is the accident notification feature ... providing after an accident or high "g" force occurrence, the company's 24/7 service provider will attempt to call you to ensure your safety. If they can not reach you, they will attempt to call up to 3 ICE (In Case of Emergency) contacts. Cool peace of mind for families!
