Q: I have a B&W 684 tower speaker set and considering bookshelf speakers for rear surround sound. I appreciate the surround sound for movies but want to replace my rear Klipsch speakers. (BW 607 or BW 685) Which would be a better fit?

A: The 607's are getting great reviews, but I have not heard them. I can only comment on the 685's, which I have in my system sitting on a pair of the Bowers and Wilkens matched stands. In my system, I had a set of Mirage speakers for audio. When listening to music, they sound beautiful. However, when I started adding video to the system, I immediately saw that they could not handle the strong bass that is common in a lot of movies. So I started looking at speakers to replace them. I listened to a lot of different brands and models and ended up buying the 685 S2 speakers. I listened to Polk, Klipsch, Definitive Technologies, KEF, ELAC, Bowers and Wilkins, and Martin Logans. Most of the speakers in my price range exhibited the same problem as my Mirage; some sounded great until big loud booms happened, and then they started waffling. Others, like the Klipsch, sounded a bit flat. They were loud, but not musical at all. I even listened to the Bowers 606 bookshelf speakers and the Martin Logan Motion 35XT bookshelf speakers and didn't think they sounded as good as the 685's. The Definitive Technologies speakers definitely handled the bass beautifully, but I just didn't think they had the same audio quality when listening to music; great for home theater, but good, not great, for music. For the price, the 685 S2 speakers are the best speakers I have found. Again, I cannot speak for the 607's, but I believe a set of 685 S2's sitting on a set of good, heavy, steel speaker stands will provide you with great sound and great bass in your system. Hope this Helps!
