A must for your dSLR
Posted by: Keyan from: on
A hotshoe flash is a must for a dSLR camera to get the best pictures, especially if you are going to do any kind of indoor photography or long distance shots outside. I find this one to be the best one for my 60D. It is not as large as the 580, and since the 60D can be a wireless flash controller I don't need the 580 to be a command unit for that either. The construction is rugged and the case is nice ballistic nylon and fits it well.
These flashes are very advanced and can even receive zoom data from your lens to adjust the power and focus of the flash appropriately. Additionally, it has a red AF assist light that puts out a grid on your subject allowing the AF system in the camera to have an ideal pattern to use for focusing. This is vastly improved over the strobe effect the pop-up flash will use for AF assist. It is also fully articulated and can be fired in just about any direction allowing for some really neat bounce flash effects. Additionally, it can be used wirelessly to provide off-camera flash and even comes with a stand (that slips into its own pocket in the case!) for this purpose. Some Canon cameras can act as a controller without a master unit, while others will require either a 580 or the hotshoe wireless master unit for this ability.
Recycle time is very, very fast, able to fire several times a second with no noticeable whine as the capacitors charge up. I would suggest some high discharge rate (not the same as mAH capacity) NiMH batteries to feed this flash unit as quickly as possible so it is always ready.
Overall, this is a must have if you are serious about taking indoor and flash photography to the next level to with your dSLR.

Great flash for amateur / beginner
Posted by: CJgadgetfan from: Chicago on
Works great for me - much better results than the built in flash on my T2i. I am a beginnner and it was easy to set up and start using immediately. Great to use the bounce feature. I took it to a wedding where a family member is a pro photographer. He was impressed by the flash and showed me some tricks like bringing down the power for less intense lighting. I am not one to want to have to study how to use items like this - just want to plug and play. This flash let me do this and now I am interested in digging deeper into the features. T2i is my first DSLR - really love the Canon product line.

External flash a necessity
Posted by: KMPPhoto from: Beaufort, SC on
The Speedlight is easy to use and greatly improved the quality of my flash pictures when I needed professional quality. I don't tend to use flash a lot, but after testing the Canon T2I for about a week with just the built-in flash, I went right back to the store to get the Speedlight. The bounce flash mode and the wide angle diffuser work great.

Take lessons first!
Posted by: Altima07 from: Norwalk,CT on
I recently purchased this flash after many months of research in the different external flashes. I'm 29 and an avid photographer (far from a pro), but gadets and electronics are what I'm good at. Let me just tell you, if your not really into your camera enough to take the time to learn about how to use it, then save yourself the $300 and go with the cheaper spedlite 230!
I say this because if you don't understand how to use the flash then why buy it? This is a great piece of equipment and adds more than sufficient light for photos up to 40ft away. Great for low light situations and adding that extra brightness for any picture. The best part is that it doesn't add that (flash color) to the photos, it add ls enough light to go PAST the subject to illuminate the entire scene.
This flash can also be used as a slave drive, as it comes with a sturdy metal stand attachment and flash is made of good sturdy materials.
The only downfall I could find was it uses rechargeable batteries instead of a battery pack like the camer! but doesn't use much power per flash which is nice, no need to constantly recharge.
I don't work for bestbuy nor have any affiliation to the company, I'm a real person and this is a real review! Great product overall!! Please feel free to ask questions or see pics!

Must have for DSLR
Posted by: rabtim from: chicago on
As an amatuer, I'm always looking for ways to improve my photos. I finally decided to spend the money on this flash and I'm convinced it is the single best purchase I've made in addition to the camera itself. The improvements in picture quality, especially when "bounced" off the wall or cieling or both, is amazing. If lighting and composition make a great photo, then this will take you at least half way there. It's easy to learn and use effectively too!

Great Flash, well worth the price
Posted by: SalukiFan from: Maryland on
If you want a flash that you will be happy with, this is it. This flash has a very quick recycle time. It has the ability to throw light in many directions, changing the look and feel of your picture. This flash increases your ability to create the effects you want. I thought the flash was a little expensive...but I found that it was worth every penny.

Makes an Incredible Difference
Posted by: lmw1015 from: louisville, ky on
I have enjoyed my Canon Rebel since acquiring it a few years ago, but did not realize how limited my range was with the built in flash. The difference in having a flash attachment for indoor and night time shots is significant enough, the ability to swivel the flash in any direction and bounce light off another surface opens up many more possibilities! An essential accessory for a good DSLR!

Great add-on. A must have.

I am new to DSLRs and to photography in general. I soon noticed proper lighting had become a problem, specially indoors. This speedlite gives you instant bang for the buck. In just a few clicks the results will be inf front of you. For an amateur like me seeing the quality of my photographs increase exponentially with little to no effort makes this purchase justified.

I am a serious amateur photographer, and got this for my T3i to use as a fill-flash (built in flash is pretty much useless unless you are right on top of your subject). It was expensive, but I am looking to take my photography to that next level, and a good flash is definitely needed. I had no idea that I could do so much with this flash. The manual is worth it's weight in gold, read it a few times and you can really put this flash to work for you. It recharges semi-quick, probably not your best bet for shooting burst, though. It's quiet. Flash will definitely illuminate more than just your subject as long as you are within about 40 feet.
My only two gripes are that the buttons are not user friendly- I have small hands, and I still have a hard time pushing them in to change settings, and that you can't buy a reusable battery pack for it (although I've been on the same batteries for over a month now- used almost every day) Overall, I'm really glad I added this to my gear kit. The 270 was too small and lacked features, but the 580 was more than I need right now. Enjoy!

Very Great Camera Flash (love it) SPeedlite 430
Posted by: GEO483 from: SACRAMENTO,CA on
I purchased this unit for the extra lighten needed while doing some inside photos. It has worked great for me!!. I also had bought some extra rechargeable batteries. To not have to buy batteries all the time. This has worked out great.... I wanted to buy the Speedlite 580 II but it was not worth the cost for me...This has been the best buy for the money...
