Stands well above other Portable ACs
Posted by: icurate from: Santa Monica on
Over the past 6 years we have owned 5 different brands of portable ACs. 3 are currently being used and 2 have met their maker.
We currently have a DeLonghi in our daughter's room that does a good job. The main benefit of this unit is that the cycling on/off is not so jarring it can wake her up.
In our main room we have a Royal Sovereign which is loud and clunky but does a decent job of cooling.
A portable AC rated at 10,000 BTUs is good for a medium sized room in a not very hot climate. We live on the coast in Los Angeles and this one does very well in a 12x15 room.
We just had a heat wave where the outside temp got up to 85 and the humidity was around 70%. This unit took a while to cool down the room in the evening but not that much longer than our previous, 12,000 BTU unit.
Another thing this was a good test of is how well it evaporates moisture. Too many units need to have the drip tray emptied after only a few hours of running in moderate humidity. We have not had to empty this one after almost 3 weeks and close to 100 hours of running.
1-Nice control panel that lights up to touch and shuts back off after a few seconds.
2-A beep that is loud enough to hear but not so loud that it wakes up my wife if I need to change a setting when she's asleep
3-Cools very well for its rated BTUs
4-Decent looking and not too heavy
5-Came with everything needed for set up
1- Display is a little too bright when it's on. It seems blinding in a dark room. But it does shut back off after a few seconds so it's not horrible.
2- It's just a little too jarring when the compressor turns on and off. Part of this is that the compressor and exhaust fan start and stop at the same exact time.
Our DeLonghi and our old Everstar both offset these 2 so there isn't as much of a sudden jolt on or off. Having said that, it is no where near as jarring as the Royal Sovereign in our main room.
Overall, I really have to sing the praises of this unit. It does a good job of cooling without making too much noise or taking up too much room.
I've had units that had to have a permanent drain hose, some that are way too loud to use in a bedroom but this seems like a very well engineered and built unit.
I am hoping to have this one for a long time.

Great Portable AC Unit
Posted by: ScottAW from: Forest Grove, OR on
I have read reviews on other sites concerning this particular unit and was at first apprehensive on buying it. There were a few complaints about the amount of noise it made and the cheap plastic used for venting. However, there are numerous web sites that rated this AC unit as one of the best so I decided to give it a try.
I am actually very pleased with the unit. It does a very good job of cooling the room I purchased it for (about 250 sq. ft) and it does it with no trouble. I went with the 10,000 BTU unit because a lot of sites state that portable AC's are less efficient than window units so it is best to go a size up. With that in mind I am convinced that it could cool a 350 sq. ft. room with ease even on the hottest of days.
As for peoples complaints that it is loud, it is an AC unit, what do you expect? On the positive side I believe that this unit is less noisy than a comparable window AC. With the fan on HIGH and unit cooling the peak decibel output I measured was 70. Looking at a DB scale this is just above the level of a normal human conversation.
The unit is a bit on the large side so if you are cramped for space this may not be the unit you want to purchase.
The controls are easy to use and navigate. I do like that you can set it to dehumidify without cooling, I think that is a big plus. You can also set it for the number of hours until it turns on and the temperature you want it to cool to.
The remote is nothing special, very basic, but it works well so you don't have to get up from what you are doing to turn the unit on/off or adjust temperature levels.
As for the bad side. This is a heavy unit, 68 lbs - over 70 in the box and the box is difficult to move alone.
Also, the plastic used for the exhaust system is %$#@. The piece that plugs into the window kit cracked as I was installing it. The same piece doesn't fit well as other people have stated and if you wish could use a bit of duct tape to shore it up. I also would like to have seen the window kit come with a longer extension.
One of the things you will need is insulation window tape. The window kit will NOT seal out the elements on its own.

Works as expected
Posted by: Johnny from: on
Bought it for our second bedroom...works as I expected based on product description and various reviews on Best Buy. I have been using it for a few weeks now and no issues so far. A bit more noisy than a windows AC but not enough to stop a good night sleep.

I love it!
Posted by: DSTeacher from: Augusta, GA on
My hope was to cool down my room in a large upstairs home w/o turning the a/c down and our electric bill up. This works. My room is the further one away from our a/c unit outside. Therefore, it receives less cool air. I finally have a cool room in a hot summer.

quiet and very efficient

I researched portable air conditioners thoroughly prior to making this purchase. I was not disappointed. It has made a very warm Seattle summer quite comfortable. I put it in my bedroom and it was a savior. It's a keeper!

Works very well for a single room or for to small conjoined rooms. I live in an area with high humidity and have to empty the unit every other day. Filter is easy to clean. Unit is ready to set up immediately and it cools off the room quickly. Is very quiet. Well worth the money. Great alternative if you can't have a window unit.

This air conditioner works QUICKLY and pushes out nice, cold air. The dehumidifying function is wonderful.
The window connector can be a little cumbersome to get in the right place if you are taking it in and out of the window instead of leaving it in full-time. There are some SMALL spaces where the window device is uneven. No matter...we use a couple of rags and close them in the window to plug the holes.
The fan runs constantly, even when it is not cooling, unlike a window unit. It is louder than I would like (not outrageous), but the cool air is totally worth it. Good wheels--they roll easily.

Excellent a/c that works as advertised
Posted by: tdbarnard from: Newport, WA on
I have had this product for a little over 2 months now. It's working just as advertised. I was a little concerned initially that I would be draining the moisture collection tank on a regular basis but happily after 2 months of heavy usage it has not yet needed draining. I would heartily recommend this air conditioner to anyone considering a portable A/C.
