Great mobile VR headset. Zero Regrets
Posted by: TXEngineer from: on
I've been wanting to try out a virtual reality headset for a while now. After reading a lot about different ones I decided to try out these Merge VR's. I have to say, they're pretty cool! The first thing that stood out was how durable they are. They're made out of a soft foam and can already say that they stand up well to abuse from kids/travel.
I downloaded a couple of the apps I recommended on the Merge site, loaded my iPhone 6, and was pretty impressed. Is it as clear and immersive as the Vive? Probably not. But for a mobile VR option, these are great especially for the price. They're really comfortable, and doesn't fog up. I can wear my glasses comfortably, which is a definite bonus. The lens adjustments are easy to use and the buttons on top are a cool feature. I'm looking forward to trying more apps that make better use of the buttons though. Overall very intuitive and easy to use.
We recently took it with us on a road trip, and it kept the kids entertained (worth it's weight for that alone). My kids have my retired iPhone 5S and it worked just fine too. Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase. If you're looking for a VR headset that doesn't require a specific phone and travels well, I can definitely recommend this one.

Great mobile VR headset -- my fave, so far
Posted by: CoolDad from: on
I've tried a lot of headsets, this one is my favorite, to date.
Can't beat the comfort, Merge is the best for this, hands down.
I care about hygiene, so I love how easy it is to clean (my pet peeve w/ pretty much every other headset)
I have kids, so I love how rugged it is (kid proof!), won't fall apart like cheaper headsets will. And we have a few different phones, so it's nice that it supports a lot of different devices. Speaking of kids, I like their app guide -- good stuff, but everything is safe for kids.
Good lenses and buttons.
Would be nice if there were more augmented reality apps on the market, but not sure what a headset maker can do about that.

-Can wear with prescription glasses with no worries or compromise. (I wear the small framed rectangular ones that are very popular these days)
-Fits iphone 4s, 5s, and even the 6 plus. I can fit the 5s without taking the case off, but I have to use the naked 6 plus for this headset.
-Extremely comfortable material
-Can be used without the head strap since you can lift it up and just hold it to your face while still being able to use the trigger controls
-Can fit in most headphones through the side slot or the opening in front foam insert.
-Quite decent selection of free apps
-App stability seems quite good too. Very few app crashes.
-The protective foam seems like it can survive a drop or two with no worries to the lenses.
-Triggers on the top and bottom seem quite sturdy but responsive. Has a slight cheap plastic feel but okay for this price range.
- Needs better headphone access due to some iphone, case, jack configurations.

The Merge is comfortable to wear and worked well with my large Galaxy Note 4. Like many of these budget VR sets, you cannot go into these expecting the world. If you do, you will be let down. I really like foam construction of the material used. Awesome design build. openings on the sides allowed for my earbuds to be connected to my phone for additional immersion. I really like the merge, but my Note 4 screen resolution is the issue right now. Real life video apps were a little grainy due to my screen resolution. It would be great to see the difference with the Note 7. The focusing of the lens on this unit was pretty easy and are located perfectly at the top, like 2 controller thumbsticks. Overall - Great design, rugged, comfortable, forgiving for those with larger phones. Worth a buy.

Great VR Goggles

I love the idea of VR and now that I have these glasses I love VR. Youtube watching will never be the same. The comfort and focus is perfect for everyone in my family (3 of the 4 wear glasses and all can use without them). On a side note, it is just as fun watching someone use them as it is using them. Completely Satisfied!

The future is here!

The Merge VR headset is outstanding. I did my best to research all of the many different VR units available and decided to go with this device. I feel I made a very good choice! The unit is very durable and yet very comfortable to wear. I have an iPhone 6s and it fits into the headset perfectly.

Changed my Mind
Posted by: StonewallJaxMon from: on
I thought VR was rather silly. As it happens, I simply did not have the right headset! The comfort of the Merge's adjustable head strap and foam body far outclasses cardboard or hard plastic alternatives. The adjustable lenses are an exquisite feature allowing for a wide range of devices to be used. My device can be easily placed in and pushed out without any cumbersome velcro or straps. This headset has changed my views on the entire virtual reality concept, now that I have experienced truly comfortable and immersive VR.

Great headset, great price!

I wanted an affordable headset to try out at home and just sort of dip my toe in the VR waters, but most of the ones I've tried at trade shows and friends' homes have been kind of uncomfortable. I was very pleased with the Merge VR goggles when I put them on! They are soft and pliable, and super easy to adjust the fit. I was impressed with the controls on the headset as well, allowing you to easily interact with VR experiences without the need for a separate controller. Just push the buttons on the top of the headset and you're playing! I'm using this with an iPhone 6s and it works great. Very happy customer!

I had high hopes for this product, however it failed to meet muster. Starting with the material, it's a hard foam. Nothing bad there and the device is surprisingly light as a result. Wouldn't worry too much of damaging it. The bands are comfortable enough and I had little difficulty adjusting them. Overall, no complaints there.
Once the phone is placed inside it becomes a different story. The weight of the phone ends up resting on my cheeks, even after multiple readjustments. Not horrible, but it does get uncomfortable after about half an hour and gradually gets moreso from there on. The heat generated from the phone is also not vented near so well as the design suggests. It easily gets hot enough to cause sweating.
I didn't have much trouble getting my phone in or out. Of note, though, the little insert for 'augmented reality' (aka covering or not covering your camera) does come out and goes back in fairly easily. Something that becomes a nuisance after the first few times it pops out.
Finally, and this isn't the product's fault, the supporting apps and content are utter junk. Most apps will be stupidly short, beg for money, have exceptionally poor graphics, not support actual virtual movement (aka they just allow tilt control), or some combination of those aspects.
TL;DR: For something just to play around with as a cheap(ish) toy, this would be alright. For a decent VR experience, it's not good at all. So I would not recommend buying this with the thought of bypassing more expensive VR options like I did.

Very good but watch out with large phones
Posted by: Wolfganggold from: on
I tried this with both my LG V10 and my Samsung Galaxy S4. The S4 is my work phone which I try to run as cleanly as possible so it's not the phone I would use in the headset on a regular basis.
My V10 BARELY fits. You have to really stretch the headset to get it in. When measuring the phone using the ruler on the outside of the package, it's a few millimeters on the short side.
The reason I mention all this is that I'm starting to get a rip in the foam material in a crucial spot. If it continues through and breaks, my phone will no longer be supported securely. I've attached a photo. It's something to keep in mind if you have a large phone.
All that said, I really like this item. There really aren't many quality apps out for VR yet but the ones that you can find are pretty awesome. There's one called Titans of Space that's really great. It's a tour of the solar system and it really showcases the potential of this technology.
A lot of the games are just demos (unless you pay for them) and are usually a single level so they're over in 5 minutes or so.
The unit is very comfortable to wear. The foam (almost Nerf-like) material doesn't bite into your head and face and the straps hold it on securely.
If you have a smaller phone, I would highly recommend this. If your phone is near the limit of the maximum size, watch out.
