With a 2TB capacity and a Gigabit Ethernet interface, this WD My Cloud external network-attached storage device lets you easily save files via your existing Dropbox or other Cloud account and access them from devices connected to your home network.
Q: Can I download and upload remotely?
A: This is not the case. I am accessing my files remotely with no problems both from a cell phone and other computers over the internet. It works great for this purpose. You DO NOT need a drop box for any of this. My problem with the unit is that by having this remote functionality turned on, the unit does not sleep and the motor runs continuously. WD Tech support told me that if remote access is turned on, the unit has to run continuously. This is a cloud killer for me. The unit will not last if it never stops spinning and working. But, by turning this functionality off, you now have just an over priced and slow (due to wireless transfer of data) storage device. It's a no go in my opinion. If you haven't purchased this, I recommend you stick with a traditional external storage drive. In my opinion, this unit was not ready for marketing as this is a major flaw.
Q: Do you need to purchase My cloud? Or some other dropbox like software of does it come with it?
A: No, all of the software is free for download on WD's website. Also, the apps for tablets/phones are all free. The only purchase you have to make is the actual product!
Q: Does it need to be open to the internet
A: This is not a wifi hot spot so people cannot access it. And you can also turn it off. Only thing is you won't be able to access when it's off. You can get other NAS hard drive only for your home network. I have Seagate 3tb nas and it works great. Everybody in my house has their own password for their files. And yes, you can turn it off if you want.
Q: Can I access files on here from my iPad over my wireless network?
A: It has mobile setup and access I look at mine on my phone, thru my wifi network
A: I have my computer set do to automatic nightly backups directly to the WD - it backs up my entire hard drive.
Q: Does this need a power source or can it plug into any cat-5 jack or network port on a switch
A: Yes, this needs a power source, in addition to being plugged into a network port. A power cable is provided, as well as a CAT-5e cable.
Q: Can different users have separate, password-protected folders?
A: I'm not an expert. the following is based on my usage. Yes. You have to create shares (folders where you store your files). You also add users (user profiles for those you grant access to the drive. Once you create shares, you can leave them publically accessible to any user, or you can make it private and give read-only or full access rights to users in any combination.
