A: How many will it hold? About 70 times your entire collection..... For reference 2 terabyte drive can hold about 650,000 3MB Photos OR 500,000 MP3 Files @ 4 minutes per song which would be about 4 years of music or 33,332 hours of music..... if you are like me and store 1080P MOVIES compressed they run about 2Gig compressed so about 1,000 movies. If you just rip the BluRay without altering it more like 200-250....I would suggest COMPRESSION! Enjoy! PS if you are a MUSIC lover then you might really like an addional product you can get at Best Buy. It is a WIRELESS USB drive from SAN DISK. I have several and they are really SUPER for trips. They fit in your pocket and when turned on they become their own WIFI device and serve the files on the drive to those connecting to it. The kids can play music or watch movies on devices that have WIFI or those with a USB port... Charge it by plugging it into a USB somewhere like an Iphone charger!.....Myh son took 6 movies to Disney and lots of songs and shared them on the bus with his friends. VERY COOL!
Q: Does this work like a usb flash drive?
A: It will work for you. Just don't buy the one that's for the cloud as that one is a little more difficult with setting up for regular cpu users. Get the one that is standard that you can plugin to the computer. Like this one WD - My Book 6TB External USB 3.0/2.0 Hard Drive - Black. Maybe not as big but the same brand/type.
A: Yes, it will. Windows 10 has full support for USB 3.0 external drives. The WD locking software executes on my Windows 10 Preview build.
Q: Is the auto back up software in CD form? Or can I download it?
A: This device comes with the backup software built-in. It also includes a free upgrade to WD SmartWare Pro for 3 PCs. This allows you to back your Dropbox directly to your hard drive, your hard drive directly to your Dropbox, or schedule automatic backups. Windows comes with automatic backup software, however, though it might not fit your needs.
Q: Can I use this interchangeably between windows vista and windows 8.1?
A: The drive comes formatted with NTFS which is supported on both 8.1 and Vista. Unless you have a very exotic security setup, you should be able to move the drive seemlessly between the two machines, much as you might a memory stick. Just try to remember to save and close all your files and to use the "eject" menu option in explorer, before unplugging from the machine.
Q: I'm looking for NAS storage that is compatible with both pc and mac
A: When you reformat the drive set it to FAT32. FAT32 is compatable with both Mac and PC
Q: Does this drive need to be partitioned in order for Vista or W7 to recognize it?
A: You should be able to plug it in and start copying data to it immediately with any version of Windows, Vista or later. It comes already partitioned (with one partition) and formatted with NTFS.
