Q: Does this camera come with an optical viewfinder?
A: Yes it does which, as an older user, I use about half the time. It also has a diopter focusing adjustment to fine tune it to your eye. When you have the zoom fully extended, you can see the barrel in the viewfinder. No big deal.
Q: transefering images via cable
A: Same issue with a PC, no mini-USB to USB cable included. I already had one laying around, but the driver to attach the camera depends on handing it off to a cloud before I get to see the pictures. Bad Canon! Naughty, naughty Canon! My pictures, not yours. Hands off and keep out! The Image Gateway is not part of the wifi solution on my iPad and Android phone - the Canon Camera Connect app communicates directly to the camera on the local network when the camera is in Wifi mode, and has worked great for getting pictures from the camera to those devices. I havent been able to get the Windows version of Camera Connect to work, however. It keeps losing connection with the camera and won't retry without restarting windows, and then fails again. I just pull the SD card out and pop that into the slot included in just about all modern PCs and laptops. If you can afford this camera, and a Mac, then an SD card adapter is cheap cheap cheap, really.
Q: does the G16 come with a memory card, battery and battery charger?
A: Comes with a memory card with very small amount of storage. I got a memory card with more storage separately It does come with battery and battery charger. I did purchase an extra battery just in case.
Q: Lens coating easily scratched
A: Not a problem for me. My small belt case is rigid over the lense area yo protect the lense assembly. If lense cover blades are struck I imagine they could come in contact with the lense. Lense filters help prevent scratches but is not provided for on the G16. So I take precautions.
A: Taking a warm camera from inside to a cold environment is an issue for all cameras especially with high humidity. It's physics. Alloy the camera to acclimate to the conditions. Also happens with lenses on eye glasses. They both can fog up. I put my camera in a coat pocket but this still requires time for temp to settle out.
