A: I can understand your interest in the RPM speed of the WD-My Book 3TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive-Black. I would be happy to assist you with this question. The RPM of this model is 5400.
A: I have owned (and still use) several external HDDs and I have not had one fail on me yet. My apartment gets frequent power interruptions and have not lost one byte of data.
Q: Does it backup both system software and data, or just data?
A: "The My Book drive can be used to backup your files, such as documents, pictures, movies, etc. Or can also be used for a system-level backup, which includes the operating system and applications. The backup setup depends on whether you use the WD Smartware or the Acronis True Image WD Edition. For more information on the complete backup, please refer to the link below and go to the ""Complete Backup"" section. http://www.wd.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=870"
Q: Is this a good device to use with a Xbox one ?
A: Yes. I have this product connected to my Xbox One and it works great. Once you connect it the Xbox One walks you through the setup and you're up and running in a matter of minutes. The only pain, but necessary evil is copying your existing games to the hard drive however the USB 3.0 makes it much faster than re-downloading each game. I'd definitely suggest the copy feature.
