A: The USB 3.0 standard is backwards-compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.0 devices and connections. Data transmission will be limited, however, to USB 2.0 speeds.

Q: does this work with a Directv HDDVR
A: I use it with Dish Network, I would call Direct and ask or check web page. With Dish you can only use it with the receivers on the same account (can't take it to a friends and use it with their dish receiver).
Q: Does this unit have to be plugged in at all times?
A: No. You can freely disconnect and reconnect these drives. I have many of these drives and I frequently disconnect one drive and then switch to another drive in my library of multimedia files and data backups.. Windows 7 handles this automatically and it only takes a short time for Windows to remap and rescan the drives.
