Well Designed and Quiet

I've owned this refrigerator for about a month and purchased it to replace an older GE that was too noisy. My only needs with a refrigerator was that it cooled properly and that it was quiet (and not necessarily in that order). I am extremely sensitive to noise invading the tranquility of my home, so I'm going to start with noise because that's the part I researched the most as I was searching for a new refrigerator...
This refrigerator is easily the quietest I've tried out. My old GE was always a bit loud, but it was just the sound of the fan. I had to turn up the TV in the living and even the bedroom sometimes when it turned on. I couldn't even hear the pool pump outside the kitchen window when this thing ran. I have an open floor plan with tile everywhere, so acoustics are a problem. The old refrigerator didn't bother me much until it started to make some vibrating noises and tones which couldn't be fixed or muted. Drove me crazy, so it was time to make a change which wasn't as easy as I thought. I started off trying two LG French door models. Both sounded like crickets in the house with the compressor. And they tended to make some high pitch whines sometimes. So I tried a Maytag top freezer. Same cricket sound and low hum. Lastly, some appliance experts told me that Kitchenaid made very good and quiet refrigerators. So I tried a French door model of that brand and had the same problem with the compressor sounding like crickets. This one also made very loud whistling sometimes, so loud that it awakened me from another room and I had to unplug it. When I say these compressors all sounded like crickets in the house, I mean I could hear it in most rooms. My wife, who didn't mind the old GE, was even bothered by the noise from these new compressors. I visited a friend who purchased the same LG model I sent back and it annoyed me the entire time I sat in his living room, but he couldn't hear it. I'm not sure of another way to describe the sound.
This Samsung refrigerator does make a similar sound from the compressor, but it isn't nearly as loud as others I've tried. I put acoustic padding on the wall behind it and on one side in the alcove where it sits and I cannot hear that crickets sound unless the house is perfectly quiet and I listen for it specifically. Even then, it's difficult.
No, it's not silent. No refrigerator is. There is a medium pitch tone just from the motor running. I can only hear it when it is very quiet in the house, and yeah, it bugs me a little bit, but it's really not loud and isn't a big deal. I cannot hear this refrigerator at all when the pool pump is running outside, or if just the central air is running, or even just a ceiling fan is running in the living room. And that includes not being able to hear the soft tone. Not being able to hear a refrigerator over fairly quiet ceiling fan is quiet enough for me. It also sometimes makes some gurgling and popping noises which I understand is just the refrigerant. It's not noticeable unless I'm standing next to it listening for it (which I had been doing for the first few days I owned it). Yeah, the ice maker makes noise when it fills and dumps and that can easily be heard over other stuff in the house. Don't care. It's not that often and only for a few seconds. And it can be turned off.
I know side by sides aren't an efficient use of space, but I still prefer them over top freezers and french doors. I don't like having to bend down to get to the refrigerator with top freezers. And I don't like french doors where I sometimes have to open the OTHER door to get to what I want. And pull out freezers where stuff is just dumped in are not great in my opinion. This one uses space better than most side by sides I've seen. With only two in our household, it's plenty of space and we haven't come close to using it all. Still more space than our old top freezer.
There are plenty of adjustable shelves in the refrigerator and freezer and in the doors. Two of the door bins can hold gallon jugs. Much more room than I'll ever need for gallons or 2 liter bottles. One of the shelves in the refrigerator can turn into a half shelf by pushing the front part back underneath to allow space for taller items on the lower shelf. I like that it doesn't use wire racks in the freezer, but rather tempered glass. Of course, it looks foggy when the door is opened sometimes, but no big deal. I didn't like the wine racks and pulled those out though. I didn't have a use for them and they just took up space for me. The refrigerator has 3 large drawers and the freezer has 2. None of them slide out all the way which is my only complaint with the design. But this really isn't an issue for me and they can be pulled out beyond the track to be removed. Larger items can fit in these bins if they are pulled beyond the limit of the track.
- The stainless steel looks nice in our kitchen and is easy to clean with Wymans wipes. The door handles are sleek looking.
- The lighting inside is fantastic. There are lights at the top in the front and all the way down the back (in both refrigerator and freezer) so that every shelf and bin is well lit. It's not theater lighting that I'm seeing in some new refrigerators, but who wants their cottage cheese lit up and displayed like an expensive art piece? The lighting in this model does the job.
- The front display in the door over the ice/water dispenser is a pleasing blue and the chimes when the buttons are pressed are nice. The door chime is also non-intrusive when the door is left open too long.
- The sides are a dark grey which I prefer over black.
- The doors are very easy to open and close.
- The ice maker on this fills up faster than my old GE. I don't know if it would be considered better than average or not, but it works fine.
- The ice dispenser will dispense cubed or crushed ice. The crushed isn't completely crushed, but rather more like chipped ice. I didn't think I'd ever use the crushed option, but I'm finding I like it better. The cubes are crescent shapes and a little smaller than the crescent ice in my old refrigerator.
- Sometimes when choosing cubed ice after using crushed, it will still sound like it's trying to crush more ice and will send out more crushed ice for a little while.
- The water dispenser works fantastic. On the first day, it was dripping quite a bit after dispensing, but it hasn't done it since. Water comes out a fast and doesn't spray. There might be one drip afterwards. And the water tastes great with the filter.
- The button that the cup presses against works well and can be pushed with a plastic/paper cup without crushing the cup.
- When I first plugged in this refrigerator, it cooled in about 2 hours. The power freeze option definitely worked. I could see the actual temps drop faster. I haven't used it since first plugging it in. Even stocking the refrigerator and freezer doesn't cause a temperature rise for me.
- The compressor sounds like it runs at different speeds. So sometimes it will make that very soft tone I mentioned and sometimes it won't. I've heard a lot of different noises from this refrigerator, but none of them loud or very bothersome.
- I can't say if the energy savings option using the button on the front really makes any difference. So I leave it on.
- The drip pan under the water dispenser is the same color as the stainless steel and doesn't hold a lot of water if you miss the cup.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this refrigerator. I'm giving it 4 stars only because I wish I couldn't hear that soft tone at all, but this one still wins easily over any other in the noise area. And the issue with the drawers not opening far enough is my only other complaint. Otherwise, I am pleased with everything else with this model.

Let me start by saying this is NOT a new model. This refrigerator has been around several years, and Best Buy previously had it on clearance. It doesn't make sense that it is now listed as new and at full price. Having said that, we purchased this model because we needed a counter depth with a proven track record. Most of the other stores/competitors/sites had several hundred reviews and it was consistently a 4.5 or better. We had initially wanted a French door style, but when this went on clearance in stainless steel, the price couldn't be beat. We went from a full size to counter depth. There is lots of shelving space and space on the doors in the refrigerator. Yes, you can fit a turkey, 13x9 pan, gallon jugs, etc. The three bin drawers are deep and fit warehouse brand extra large bags of fruit, lettuce, etc. The lighting is bright and consistent, even if a jug or something is in front of it. We haven't had any trouble with the ice maker or water, but have purchased the extended warranty. Plenty of ice for our family but we would buy a bag for a party. We were more concerned with having enough refrigerator space over freezer space because we have a small chest style freezer. However, there really is a decent amount of freezer space. Not sure a large pizza box could fit, though. Both sides do well with cooling and even temperatures. Most importantly, because we have an open floor plan, this model is NOT noisy. You can hear ice drop like with any model but it is very quiet when it runs. All of the parts (shelves, dispenser) seem very well made and sturdy. I would strongly recommend this model but NOT at full price.

Fridge perfect, BEWARE of provided measurements
Posted by: taytaynow37 from: on
I have only positive things to say about this refrigerator. The configuration options on the door allow you to maximize the space to meet your needs. It feels spacious despite being comparatively small - and it is EXTREMELY quiet. The only time I hear it at all is when ice is dropping down into the chute. I never hear the compressor.
The lone (fairly big) complaint I have, is the measurements provided by Best Buy are NOT accurate. The delivery guys commented that this "unfortunately" happened all the time - that the specs are commonly just slightly wrong.
Specifically - the height provided is shy by 3/4 of inch. To clarify, the measurement listed is the height of the door - HOWEVER on the top/front of each door are plastic compartments that house wiring for the internal lights as well as a magnet that triggers the "door ajar" bell. This little compartment sticks up above the door by roughly 3/4 inch - and is NOT included in the specs. SO - if your refrigerator needs to fit into a space with cabinetry above it - tack on an inch to ensure it can slide in all the way. We had to cut out notches into our cabinets to get it to fit and luckily you can't tell but I thought this a pretty major oversight by Best Buy.
That said - I LOVE the refrigerator - just hope it fits for you from the box without requiring a jigsaw....

Worst Customer Service Ever!
Posted by: Linn from: on
Refrigerator looks nice on outside but doesn't have a cold storage drawer, ice cream never freezes solid (if temp decreased, frost forms in freezer) and Samsung customer service is terrible! Fridge died May 21, 2016, 10 months after purchasing. Refrigerant leaked out and could not be repaired. After numerous phone calls, I was told not to discard my fridge and I would receive an email with refund instructions within 24-48 hours. Didn't hear anything so I called, it is actually 5 more days. Still no action so called again today. It will be another 5-7 days this time. This has been the pattern--tell me one thing--no action so I call and it is another story. It is June 17 and I still don't have a refrigerator or a refund and I've been told it will be another 5-7 days! Been eating out, doing carry out and using a cooler. We also lost about $400 in food when the fridge died. Absolutely outrageous and totally unacceptable to be treated this way!

I like the fridge.
Posted by: Jean from: on
I like the lighting in the fridge and the tip out shelves. I was worried about whether the ice maker would make enough ice, but that has not been an issue. One thing I do not like is the finish. It shows everything, and I have not found a product that will clean it without leaving streaks.

much better than i expected
Posted by: Fuzy from: Motown on
I was hoping to buy a different style but nothing that fit my space was in stock. The salesman helped me select this one because it was available. I was amazed to find how much I love it! It is so well designed that it holds more food than my former refrigerator, and it was larger! It makes so much ice that I usually have the maker in the off position and can save extra energy. It came with a built in wine rack that I removed and can easily put back in place, as needed. It's very quiet and very attractive. The drawers in the freezer and refrigerator section hold a lot more than anticipated. I'm very happy with this purchase!

Died after 14 months
Posted by: Tom1397 from: on
I originally purchased a prior similar Samsung model in March of 2011. The sealed system of that unit leaked after less than 3 years and Samsung refunded the purchase price. Figuring that it was a fluke, I replaced it with this model, and the sealed system developed at least two leaks after about 14 months and again Samsung refunded the purchase price.
I suppose this is just really bad luck (what are the odds of a lemon: maybe 1%?), but - under severe penalty from my spouse - I cannot buy another Samsung refrigerator. If something like this happens, it takes at least several weeks to resolve. Imagine the inconvenience and spoiled food, etc. We bought a "second" smaller refrigerator to place in the garage to help bridge the gap.
Other than that, I liked it.
Based on this experience, any model I do buy must have a warranty (Parts AND Labor) on the sealed system of at least 5 years.
SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS just in case. You may not get the full amount refunded unless you have the receipt (as I learned on the first one).

Fridge quit after 7 months - Cust Service is worse
Posted by: krazykz79 from: on
I had this fridge for much less than a year. The entire fridge/freezer quit on me. It took me over 2 weeks and a complaint into BBB to finally get the fridge approved for replacement. Turns out it can't be repaired (crack and freon leak) I had to call Samsung daily to get answers. I was also promised a Samsung gift card due to all the trouble but haven't seen it. I'm lucky to have gotten the replacement done. I love Samsung Products ..... but the Customer Service is beyond easy to work with. I had Best Buy follow up more than Samsung.

Nice layout and easy to use features
Posted by: GCVG from: Waterloo, IA on
Wanted side by side counter depth refrigerator. This one fits the bill perfectly. It has great layout. All functions easy to control form the outside. Easy to replace water filter. Unit is amazingly quiet. Only downside is the stainless steel. If you have kids I would not recommend.

Buyer beware : Samsungs are lemons
Posted by: trpsmyrna from: on
I bought this model two years ago. The food in my freezer is now thawed out as I write this. It stopped cooling (both compartments) sometime in the last 24 hours. I called Samsung service. They said it MIGHT still be under warranty depending on the problem. They set up a service call. I called the 'Samsung approved' repair shop ... they said it would be five days before they could come out. I didn't want to wait so I called another repair shop, expecting Samsung not to honor any warranty anyway. The repair shop scheduled me for the next day, but then said they would not be able to come out when I told her it was a Samsung. She referred me to another repair company, informing me that 'MOST REPAIR SHOPS WON'T WORK ON SAMSUNG'S ANYMORE, BECAUSE THEY HAVE SO MANY PROBLEMS.' I had a similar very negative experience with a Samsung Windows tablet. At the time, i figured it was just a quirk. Now with the refrigerator, and the repair shop's comments, I'll never purchase ANY Samsung product again.
