Q: does it have very strong smell when new and for how long?
A: I would not recommend this product at all. The smell was terrible with the stainless interior. I have never encountered a smell like this from a dishwasher. I also have asthma so I am very aware of fumes and smells from new items. It did not cause an attack for me but it was very unpleasant.
Q: Any other options besides stainless steel?

The installation guide for the DW80F800UWS includes instructions for installing it with or without an air gap. A: The display color is blue. I don't have a French door fridge yet so I'm not sure if it's the same icy blue you're referring to.
