Excellent home security and automation opportunity

Been about a week+ since I bought this kit.
I was on a lookout for sometime... the battery support to keep hub running in case of power loss, and less cloud usage to process signals, made me take the leap, as soon as smartthings v2 was released.
I am a first time smartthings buyer... so it's been a learning experience for me, on how to use the kit to make the most out of it.
Here is how I am using it right now...
- One door sensor went on the main door, the second one on garage door. They both also measure temperature... which is great!
- The motion sensor was placed in the living room, corner wall. I use it to disarm my house when any motion happens after 5:30am. Obviously for alerts when home is in armed (away) mode.
- The switch...it has a heat blower connected to it!
It's turned on when the motion sensor measured temperature is at 64 degrees. It turns off when the temperature reaches 68. This allowed me to reduce heat setting on the home thermostat and hopefully save on heating cost.
- There are cheaper zwave devices that can do the same job, that are much cheaper and they integrate with smartthings. So not sure if this kit is a runaway deal!
- Smartthings mobile presence is a hit-miss. It relies on unreliable phone location setting to arm/disarm house. There are just too many misfires, because my phone's gps location determination is unreliable. I wish there was a easier way... like being connected to home wifi or not.
- AT this time you can not add multiple family member phones to smartthings. I had to log in with my account on my wife's phone. I think it confuses the hub too.
- There is no easy tasker integration (which i use a lot on my phone)...learn coding, then maybe.
- I am happy i bought this. Gives me peace of mind when i am out, that home is monitored
- I am planning to buy more devices as I learn how to use them to either save money or effort by automating.
- It would become much better if smartthings can sort out the multi user login issue, and allow mobile presence detection via wifi connection.
Overall - I recommend you buy it if your on the fence

Good product but have its flaws.
Posted by: eiei from: on
So far so good until SmartThings upgrade it's software. I was notified of its upgrade but the system didn't come back online on its own as it requires reboot. I was unhappy because I was traveling when it happened and I was counting on it to monitor my home while I was away. I was not able to monitor my home while I was away until I perform the reset my self. I consider this method of SmartThings to be wrong as it failed its purpose. I should have asked an option to permit the upgrade than autonomously performing the upgrade without my control. I own this equipment, nobody should do anything on it without my permission. One of the very reason of my purchase is to monitor my home security while I am away so it should be reliable when I am away.

Great security system for an apartment
Posted by: Smitty from: on
I like how this system alerts you via text and with a camera it's easy to see what has triggered the motion sensor. I would have given this item a higher score except for the hub going down the other night after 2 weeks with no problem. In my case I was around home and could reset the hub when I got back. This is my issue with the product, no way to reset if your on vacation and far away. You have to push the reset manually on the back of the hud, Kinda defeats the need for the equipment. I was alerted by the company that they had some sort of glitch, when I voice my concern via e-mail, they did respond with a sorry and s promise to get back to me when they were done dealing with all their models. For now I'm going to say I wouldn't recommend this product until I here from them as to a resolution to this issue.

Home Automation made easy!
Posted by: Solorgod from: Fontana, CA on
After much research I finally pulled the trigger on my home automation project and I was not disappointed. In an effort to save on monthly service fees associated with my TWC Intelligent Home security system I decided to go with the Smart Things Home Monitoring Kit. The system is very easy to setup and I was up and running within 20 minutes. Most complaints I read from reviewers was they could not get the system up and running. I did not find that to be the case. Since my purchase I have bought additional "things" to add to my system. I highly recommend Smart Things, but make sure you follow all the step to get the system successfully.

Life is Getting Easier

Definitely a helpful tool. I've integrated it with Echo, so we enjoy turning the lights on/off verbally. Also adds to our peace of mind to set alerts for temperature drops or a wet basement. Scheduling the outdoor lights has been useful as well. I'm up to about 15 "things" now, without any real issues. I've been able to purchase a lot a varying hardware that has all been compatible. The only issues I have had, generally surround the use of apps and their unintended results(basically user error).

Great home automation system
Posted by: Editingleader88 from: Gainesville, VA on
I purchased this after being fed up with Lowes Iris home automation system.
I purchased this system and it works so much better plus no monthly fees. I also have been able to buy Lowes iris contact sensors and they work with smart things and are significantly cheaper. I have had this system for a couple of months and it has been working very well. I would recommend Smart Things to anyone. Smart things is also compatible with a wide variety of components.

Great System, Needs more Things
Posted by: LoboNM from: on
We purchased this system so we could have basic security and automation in our home. The product works well and we haven't had any connectivity issues with it. We do like the idea that you can add monthly monitoring to it, which we will do the couple months of the year when we are traveling. There has been a few reviews online stating that the new Samsung TVs will be able to act as the SmartThings Hub as well at some point this year if not already which would make this hub nothing more than a paperweight for owners of those TV's. I do recommend the product however.

Easy to setup.
Posted by: B248 from: on
Setup was fairly easy and quick. Only issue was that the outlet needed to be pretty close to the hub to get them to sync and it took a few tries to actually sync. The instructions do say that you may have to place the outlet and hub close to each other if it doesn't sync automatically upon use. After syncing up, the connection has been fine and the monitoring and control of the outlet is easy with the app.

More Options then Wink, but Harder to program
Posted by: abigwells from: on
The Smartthings Hub has many great features and works well, however it can be buggy and have down times. Programming is also difficult and confusing. It's hard to decide if you should use routines or smartapps to schedule your lights and scenes.
