I use this for college. Primarily Biology lectures. I use the 192kbps mono mp3 format without the noise reduction. I really like how easy it is to connect to my laptop and transfer my recordings to my phone in the mp3 format and listen to them in my car or anywhere. The noise reduction in my opinion sounds like my professor is in a "concert hall" or like a "deep sea effect". Sounds terrible so I never use it. Since you can't upload just audio to youtube, I uploaded a file to soundcloud so you can hear a lecture and get an idea of the quality.
I would really recommend this for college lectures. I would not recommend the silver version of this recorder (the ICDBX132) because you do not get a USB imput; so your recording are essentially stuck to the recorder. However I think I will upgrade to the sony ICDAX412 with the stereo recording with the way better sound filter.

Great Little Recorder
Posted by: jazzman1 from: Middletown, USA on
This is my 1st digital recorder and I'm delighted with the performance. I thought the price too much, but I tried cheaper recorders from other brands, and was not satisfied with their performance. I love this Sony recorder. I usually like most Sony products.
This recorder has performed as advertised and I am very pleased with the results. To get the full benefits you have to go into the "detailed menu" to setup all the options. The included instructions are not clear on how to do this. Many of the features are set by default to off. As a previous reviewer stated this recorder does have "voice activation", It's set by default to off....you have to go into the "detailed" menu to turn it on. I like the fact you can add an SD card. I put in an 8 GB card that I use for music, e-books, etc., and I use the built in 4GB internal memory for voice, meetings, lectures, etc. You can switch between them in the detailed menu. There was a learning curve for me with this Sony product, and I'm a semi geek and very tech savvy. The included instructions leave a lot to be desired. I recommend everyone to download the instruction manual to your Pc, with the included USB cord. You will see much on how to use this product that is omitted in the included instructions. I purchased "Energizer" rechargeable batteries, and I use an outboard charger I already have. You can get batteries and a charger for AAA batteries for about $20.00. The rechargeable batteries will pay for themselves in a short time, especially if you use the recorder a lot. I also intend to purchase a small case to hold the recorder and cords.
I use a Aux. cord that I plug into the earphone/output Jack, then into the AUX input jack in my car. Most newer cars have Aux and USB inputs, and I can play the sound from this recorder through my car speakers. All in all I think this a great product, I didn't give reliability the highest rating because I've never owned a digital recorder before, but since it's a Sony, I expect it to live up to the Sony rep. I didn't give ease of use the highest score because many will be unsatisfied with using this recorder if they don't go to the detailed menu, or are not tech savvy, and don't download the instruction manual. After I figured how to get to the "detailed menu", using this product is a breeze.

above average recorder

This recorder has better features than a lot of basic entry level recorders out there. The features include 4GB built-in memory, expandable memory thru microSD slot, and being able to connect to a computer using a USB cable to transfer the recorded mp3 files. It's a compact, small device (feels sort of like a small tv remote control) and both recorded voice quality and battery life (on 2 AAA batteries) seem to be pretty good so far.
Some drawbacks are are the mono microphone (recorders with the built-in stereo microphones cost more and usually make the recorder physically larger, there is a mic jack on this recorder though that would allow you to hook up an external stereo microphone) and the higher cost to get the extra features mentioned above. I estimate the features like the memory card slot and USB connector add about $20 extra on top of a basic recorder model that doesn't have these features. But I think they are worth the extra cost.

It is voice activated
Posted by: satisfaction from: GR, Mi on
This is voice activated..... If you your going to buy this or have bought it you need to hold the menu/display button down until the screen changes then look for VOR it will say off under it..... change that to ON and then hit record and all is good!!!!! It will take some playing around with but you will figure it out....... That is the only down side with this recorder..... there is a learning curve...... its small...... seems to work well..... I havent had a chance to test the battery life yet....... felt like i need to let folks know it is a voice activated recorder after reading where others wrote that it was not...... good luck.

Pros: long battery life, easy to organize files using recorder, good sound cut feature to cut out background noise, durable
Cons: a little bit too soft when playing back a lecture (could be at max volume and still wouldn't be that loud), I couldn't find a way to mute key tones, so it made loud beeping noises when i clicked buttons.
Overall: I've been using it to record lectures for 6 months and for the most part the sound quality is excellent and its fairly reliable
