  • Key Specs
    • Effective Pixels: 20 megapixels (The actual number of pixels which make up the viewable image.)
  • General
    • Product Name: AX100 4K HD Flash Memory Premium Camcorder
    • Brand: Sony
    • Model Number: FDRAX100/B
    • Color: Black
  • Imaging
    • Image Sensor Type: CMOS (CCD and CMOS are the two main technologies used in image sensors. CCD, the older of the two types, turns analog light signals into digital pixels. This conversion happens without distortion, resulting in high-quality images. Newer CMOS sensors use transistors at each pixel to move electrical charges. CMOS sensors are typically less expensive, but also require more light to create distortion-free images.)
    • Digital Zoom: 160x (A digital zoom is accomplished electronically, with no adjustment of the camera's optics, and no optical resolution gained in the process. The existing data is not enhanced or added to, merely displayed at a lower resolution, thereby giving an illusion of an enlarged image.)
    • Optical Zoom: 12x (The optical zoom uses a combination of lenses that magnify the image prior to it being registered at high resolution by the imaging sensor.)
    • Image Stabilization: Digital (This feature helps reduce image/video blur or distortion that may occur from unsteady motion.)
    • Low Light/High Sensitivity: true (High sensitivity digital imaging devices are designed to work in low light conditions to produce a high dynamic range image.)
    • Image File Format(s): JPEG (Standardized software format(s) of storing digital images. The type of format chosen for capturing and compressing the image can determine quality, level of detail, and storage space required.)
  • Focus
    • Auto/Manual Focus: Automatic/manual
  • Exposure Control
    • Minimum Aperture: f/2.8 (The smallest opening of a lens, typically expressed in f-numbers. The larger the number, the smaller the aperture and the less light that can enter the lens. A smaller aperture creates a larger depth of field, which keeps both foreground and background in focus.)
    • Maximum Aperture: f/4.5 (The limit to how wide a lens can be open, typically expressed in f-numbers. The smaller the number, the larger the aperture and the more light that can enter the lens. A larger aperture creates a shallower depth of field, helpful for keeping subjects in focus and blurring background details.)
    • Maximum Focal Length: 426 millimeters (The maximum distance between the lens and the image sensor that allows the subject to be in focus. The greater the focal length, the smaller the area of scene captured.)
    • Effective Pixels: 20 megapixels (The actual number of pixels which make up the viewable image.)
  • Lens
    • Minimum Focal Length: 29 millimeters (The minimum distance between the lens and the image sensor that allows the subject to be in focus. The shorter the focal length, the greater the area of scene captured.)
  • Display
    • Display Type: LCD
    • Screen Size: 3.5 inches (Size of the screen, measured diagonally from corner to corner.)
    • Touch Screen: true (Touch-screen devices make navigating more intuitive. Using a touch-screen display, you can do things such as tap to select, hold and drag to move items, swipe to scroll, and pinch to zoom.)
    • Varying Angle Screen: false (The camera's screen can be flipped out and adjusted to rotate, tilt, and/or swivel.)
  • Video
    • Maximum Video Frame Rate: Other (The maximum frequency at which consecutive images can be captured by a video recording device.)
    • HDR Mode: true (HDR Mode uses multiple photos taken at different exposures to add more dynamic range to photographs. HDR technology displays content with greater contrast between bright and dark, resulting in clearer and more lifelike images.)
    • Slow Motion Recording: true
    • Video Encoding Formats: MPEG-4, XAVC S (The process of preparing the video for output, where the digital video is encoded to meet proper formats and specifications for recording and playback with the use of a compatible device.)
  • Compatibility
    • Tripod/Monopod Mountable: true (A support function that allows the device to be mounted to monopods and tripods for leveling and stability.)
    • Socket Size: 1/4 in.
    • Memory Card Compatibility: Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick XC-HG Duo, Secure Digital, Secure Digital Extended Capacity (SDXC), Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) (The type of memory card(s) recommended for use with the product.)
  • Features
    • Action Camera: false
    • Integrated Speaker(s): true
    • Night Recording: true (The ability to capture and record video in low-light conditions, typically via infrared light or intensifier tubes that amplify existing light to illuminate the scene.)
    • Wind Noise Reduction: true (If you take a lot of outside videos, in windy conditions, you'll need to make sure you have wind noise reduction on your camcorder. It does just what it says it does, cuts down the noise of the wind as it hits the microphone.)
  • Connectivity
    • Wireless Connectivity: None (The manner in which a device sends data to another device over a short distance without the use of wires or cables.)

Q: Does this camera have a shotgun mic mount or how would you connect a RODE VideoMic to it?

A: Your question isn't really clear because you are asking about microphone mounts in general. I will attempt to provide useful information I hope will help. This camera does have the ability to use external microphones. You can use a Sony microphone that is compatible with MIS and not need any other adapters. The FDR-AX100 uses a proprietary Sony Multi-Interface Shoe (MIS) rather than an industry standard cold/hot shoe. You are able to mount a RODE VideoMic or any other mic to the shoe but you must first purchase a MIS to Cold Shoe adapter. Once you put this adapter on, you can then mount any standard cold/hot shoe mounted microphone to the Sony camera. The microphone input is a standard 3.5mm stereo mini-jack. If you are looking to use XLR microphones you will need either a XLR-3.5mm stereo adapter or an external sound recorder.

Q: Can the 4k recorded videos be played back on non-4K TVs?

A: Yes. It is just scaled down to your resolution such as 1080p.

Q: Can someone advise me how to play 4k video on 4k Samsung TV (UN65F9000AF)? Error: "The defined resolution is not supported 3840x2160"

A: You may want to check that the HDMI cable is fully compliant. If it runs through another component to get to the TV, that could be an issue. There are new HDCP requirements for 4K HDMI..

Q: Does it have viewfinder, so I can record looking through viewfinder instead of looking at LCD screen.

A: Yes, it has a nice bright electronic viewfinder that shows all the same information you would see on the LCD screen. You can pull the viewfinder out a little and also tip it up for easier viewing.

Q: The specifications state that the focusing is manual. I want to clarify what this means. Does it literally mean that I have to turn some knob every time I want to focus?

A: I'm use to shooting professional video with Pro camera & DSLR/mirror less cameras. I purchase this camera because it is smaller and lighter than the Sony NEX FS 100. It has the ability to focus manually with a ring on the lens which can be set to zoom or focus. It also has a great auto focus with the ability to have it focus several ways including touching the LCD display where you want it to focus. You do not have to manually focus if choose to use auto focus.

Q: Which 4K laptops are best for editing video from this camera?

A: 4k videos are pretty demanding even for playback so let alone video editing. I got a desktop with core i7 5030K and it seems to be able to handle it pretty well. My laptop is 4 yr old and it can't deal with the 4k video playback even. Make sure you have a fast multi core processor with fast bus interfaces and good amount of RAM. Eah 4K frame is an 8 megapixel image. So doing it 30 times per second needs processing power capable of decoding 8 megapixel images 30 times a second.

Q: Does this camera have a light to record at night

A: The camcorder does have a light to record at night.
