Q: Is it a USB 2 or USB 3 connection?
A: USB 3.0. However, USB 3.0 will plug into a USB 2.0 port and will work just fine. They are backward compatible it will just operate at USB 2.0 speeds when plugged into USB 2.0 port on your computer.
A: Yes it will, but the programs you transfer will not work. They need to be installed on your new machine. Your files will be fine and work.
Q: will this work with a IDE HDD as well as a SATA HDD?
A: No. There might be an adapter that would allow this, but out of the box it's SATA only

A: As long as you can extract the hard drive from the case it's in

A: You are correct. The insertion slot accomodates both desktop and laptop sized SATA drives.
A: No eSata port. It is USB 3.0 only (backward compatible to USB 2.0). Compatible with 2.5" HDD, 3.5" HDD, and SSDs. SATA Compatability: SATA III, SATA II, SATA I on the internal interface. The external interface is USB 3.0.
