Q: must water be emptied from unit
A: You can set up the unit to continuously drain or you can use it on Fan Only until water evaporates from the water bin. For continuous drain, the hose must be positioned to let gravity do its thing.
Q: cools without using the window?
A: Theoretically you could use a chimney or skylight instead. Air conditioning requires the hot air be vented outside. That could either be through ducting, chimney, window vent, or building a wall vent (like for a clothes dryer) For areas that are not humid, you could use a swamp cooler to cool down. That does not require venting.
