Bought a samsung soundbar 2 years ago. Sounds good, but always had to turn it up louder to hear the voices on tv, but then it was too loud for our children trying to sleep upstairs.
We wanted to hear the voices in shows and movies easier at night without having to crank the volume up.
I love cnet and crutchfield and some others for professional reviews. For the $400 and under price range they say this is the soundbar to get. They are totally right.
Again, soundbars can go way over $400, and sound better than this. But for this price range, this soundbar is truly excellent. Vocal clarity is excellent, we don't have to crank the volume up anymore for hearing dialogue in movies.
The surround sound for a soundbar subwoofer combo is excellent. Smartphone app to control soundbar is great. Remote control of subwoofer is great.
The subwoofer is not overwhelming/annoying like many soundbars in this price range. The punch it gives is the correct ammount, and a quality punch.
This is five stars. So glad we bought it.
Played Flo Rida for fun on the samsung soundbar subwoofer and then on the yamaha yas-203. What a difference. Depth, balance, range, clarity. All there on the yamaha.
We did an online order with best buy, heard from them in one week that it came in. Very smooth order experience.

Read this before you buy a cable also.

No need the Yamaha unit comes with the digital audio optical cable. There's no need to purchase separate.
The Yamaha unit sounds as advertised and reviewed. Not super strong on bass but that's not what I was looking for when shopping. I own a few other Yamaha components and this is equal in quality and performance to all the others.

Great sound quality

While we would have loved a custom sound system, we were both surprised by the quality of sound this system produces. We always had to crank up the volume on the flat screen to hear anything, but this is such a robust sound, we almost use the bluetooth more for music than we use for watching tv. I would definitely recommend.

This soundbar is exceptional - I'm not sure why people are dogging it! I loved it so much that I ordered one for each of my parents! The Vizio 3.1 is also excellent (I have it too) if $400 is too much. I do think the Yamaha has better bass and I like the clear voice option, but the Vizio is amazing as well.

The yamaha yas-203 is decent for the price. I have a vizio 3821 and the yamaha. Overall the sound of the yamaha is better and the bass is more subtle (in a good way). The vizio bass is overpowering at some points in normal TV shows. The features of both systems are comparable, but the remote sending feature was a nice extra on the yamaha. However, I returned the yamaha and kept the vizio, because even though the yamaha is a better soundbar it wasn't worth an extra $250 in my opinion. If it was at the $250 to $300 price point I would have given this unit 5 stars.

I have a large living room and kitchen area downstairs and this sound bar fills the room well. Powerful sound and the subwoofer packs a punch for the size. Definitely recommend!

Great sound Great Value

There was no way I could live with the sound from the internal speakers on my new Samsung tv. While I am amazed the tv can put out the kind of sound it does, being so thin, it just can't fill a room and doesn't give you the immersive movie and sports experience. I compared many soundbars, both in store and online, and this was the best combination of sound and price. Reviews are consistently excellent. The Yamaha delivers with excellent voice clairity along with well balanced bass (doesn't overwhelm even with some intense action movie scenes). The bass is adjustable which is great as I can dial it up some for movies and down for news and talk shows. Yamaha also has a free remote app that I find makes quick adjustments easy. It packs features more often found in higher priced models, such as the IR repeater that assures that your tv remote will continue to work even if the sound bar blocks the bottom of your tv. I find that the sound quality when playing music via bluetooth is just ok. I realize that the sound will never match a 5 speaker surround system, but for ease of use, and great sound that is much much better than the tv can deliver on its own, this is an outstanding value.
