BASEketball [WS] [DVD] [1998]

  • SKU: 3534232
  • Release Date: 12/29/1998
  • Rating: R
David Zucker directs South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone in the sports spoof BASEketball, which comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. French and Spanish subtitles are accessible, and the soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include biographies of the cast and crew, production notes, and a theatrical trailer. This Universal release does a superb job of presenting the film, but the disc would be more appealing with either deleted scenes, or a commentary by Parker and Stone.

    Synopsis

    BASEketball
David Zucker directed this slapstick sports comedy starring South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Competing two-on-two against some basketball jocks, goofballs Joe Cooper (Parker) and Doug Remer (Stone) attempt to win by devising new rules while they play. Thus is born the bizarre game of "BASEketball." Rules: Court position decides whether a sunk basket counts as a single, a home run, or whatever; the opposing team can retrieve missed shots. Verbal abuse is allowed. Ditto for gross-outs -- or anything to annoy the shooter. The game becomes popular in driveways, so sports promoter Ted Denslow (Ernest Borgnine) proposes a deal to form a pro league. Dallas Felons owner Baxter Cain (Robert Vaughn), hopes to increase revenues with product placements and pro endorsements, but he needs the okay of team owners. Ted dies during the season finals, leaving Cain to deal with his widow Yvette (Jenny McCarthy). However, Ted willed the team to Cooper, who must win the upcoming season or ownership goes to Yvette. Cameos by Bob Costas and Al Michaels. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

I was so excited to see that this was finally getting a blu-ray release. This was a instant buy for me. The transfer is about the best we are going to get with Universal, At times it is grainy and other times it looks really good. The movie auto plays and they did not really care to make a special menu for the release. They also brought over some of the DVD extra features like the Spotlight on Location feature and Music video.

The movie itself is great. I’ve probably watched it 100 times in the last few years on regular dvd. When I saw this at my San Jose Best Buy I decided to pick it up on bluray for 5.99. I thought what a great deal. When I got it home and started the movie it suffered from skipping and the audio did not match up to the actors. After inspecting the disc there appears to be nothing wrong with it.

There's definitely not much to expect here, other than a simple comedy classic from the 90s, when the creators of South Park flirted with acting careers. Generally a fun film, but nothing mind-bending. The best aspects are Stone and Parker and their interactions. The transfer is fine, and the extras are as sparse as the DVD edition--but at least this was given the time of day!

I'm a big South Park fan and this movie has Trey Parker and Matt Stone's humor all over it. Even though it's dated, it still remains hilarious. I never thought it would port over from DVD. Didn't think it was on Universal's radar however here it is. The transfer is decent at best. It also includes the same DVD bonus features. It's a welcome upgrade especially for the price.

One of my all time favorite comedies! Trey and Matt are stellar in this off-the-wall concept. The cameos and references are hysterical, on top of the charm and heart behind the movie. The blu-ray transfer isn't *the best*, but it's still a lot more clear and crisp than the standard DVD.

The movie is very funny overall, but is a little lacking. For some reason I am just not compelled to watch this movie when i browse through my selection, even though i find most of the movie very entertaining. Some scenes force me into laughter, but i cannot think of a scene that i don't enjoy. Great movie, but lacks a "WATCH ME" characteristic.

If you love South Park, Team America, and anything to do with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, then this is a MUST SEE movie for you. It takes two sports, combines them into one (which is actually a pretty cool sport, baseketball that is) and has joke after joke. Highly recommended to any South Park fan or just anyone who likes a good laugh.

There are moments in this film that will stick with me forever. It's certainly not the best thing Trey Parker and Matt Stone have ever been involved with but it's far better than the majority of generic comedies that were coming out at the time or any time since.
