At some point we need to eliminate batteries that aren't able to be re-energized (recharged). I've used the Energizer brand along with the Apple rechargeable batteries and they hold up really well to repeated cycles. Grab them when they go on sale and it doesn't take long to make up the cost difference.
Rechargeable batteries are way to go If you use batteries regularly. With two kids at home, this was absolutely needed for my family. I do not have any comparative experience with other products but these are working satisfactorily for me.
For years i've negated switching out all the small battery devices across the home. This past Christmas we converted all the decorations to rechargeable AA's and then from the remaining 3 seasons we use them across other devices like wireless mouses & keyboards.
Honestly, its just cut down so much on the amount of batteries we are recycling at our local Best Buy by utilizing these rechargeable units.
We use these with our already purchased charger and reusable batteries to keep our remotes always ready. They allow you to recycle and not continually have to throw away old batteries into the trash every few weeks.
