Garage Storage & Organization
Garage Storage & Organization (1)
Finding simple ways to improve garage organization
Garages provide a great place for storing all kinds of things. They can fit bulky items, like an e-bike or outdoor power tools. You can dedicate floor space to big items and hang some, such as a trimmer or leaf blower, from heavy-duty storage hooks. Meanwhile, smaller items, like seasonal decorations or holiday lights, can be organized into storage containers and kept on garage shelving.
The keys to good storage are accessibility and clear organization. It’s a good garage storage idea to make a list of the items you need to accommodate by type and size. Then, start with a plan for the bulkiest items on the list, like kayaks, power tools, kids’ ride-on toys or a lawn mower. Once you have those figured out, consider how to accommodate smaller things.
Always measure your garage space thoroughly before selecting shelving and storage racks or a tool chest or garage cabinet. If you want additional food storage for your home, you might also consider a garage-ready refrigerator or chest freezer.
Enjoying your newly organized garage
The most important part of deciding how to organize your garage is choosing a methodology that will help you find and access things with ease. Figure out which boxes or containers you will need to get to frequently and put them in prime positions. Be mindful of any items that are difficult to move. You will not want to place these in spots that block access to other storage spaces.
Label containers and create a list or map that helps you remember your garage organization. Invest in stackable plastic containers. They will hold up and stack better than cardboard boxes. They will also provide more protection against insects, which can be attracted to cardboard.
Good garage storage methods can also be applied to other storage areas, like an attic, a basement or an outdoor storage shed. When choosing storage spaces for specific items, always consider what kind of temperature control you have in those spaces. Some areas may get too hot or cold for storing certain equipment or materials.
