Lavalier Microphones

A lavalier microphone is a small clip-on microphone that is often used for recording or amplifying a person’s voice. It is sometimes known as a lapel mic or lav mic, and it is convenient for recording interviews, broadcasting presentations, making films, learning to produce a vlog and more.

Lavalier mic systems include the small lav microphone that can be clipped to clothing or taped to the skin beneath clothing, a battery pack/wireless transmitter that can be attached to a belt, stored in a pocket or secured to the body and a wire that connects the two.

You may choose a lav mic when building your vlogging kit or use both a lavalier and a shotgun mic, as it’s wise to have backup audio recording. If you are using a lav mic for a live presentation, you will need a mixer and live sound speakers to control and broadcast what the mic captures.

Because a lav mic clips to the user’s clothing, it is useful in situations where a hands-free microphone is needed. Lavalier microphones are specifically designed to prioritize picking up sound from the user’s voice while filtering out noise from their surroundings. This makes them ideal for capturing clearer audio in noisy environments.

If you are using your mic for filming purposes, know that you will also need a field audio recorder to store the files (unless you’re using a laptop) and an audio interface to control sound sources.
