Backyard or outdoor lighting comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes, but one of the most consistently popular forms of backyard lighting is the solar garden light. Offering both practical and aesthetic benefits, solar lights harness the power of the sun to illuminate your space and offer you and your guests greater ease when walking around.

Oftentimes, solar lights form the foundation of an outdoor lighting setup, covering the basic needs for navigating paths and steps. When choosing solar lights for yard use, consider at aesthetics, reviews and placement. Many models stick directly into the ground, but some sit atop fences or railing posts.

Meanwhile, outdoor smart lights—which can programmed to go on and off at certain times, change color and more—offer an extra pop as outdoor accent lighting. When lighting your patio or yard, it’s best to consider where you need light for greater ease of movement (such as along paths and steps) and where you want lights to accent the landscaping or design features of the space.

Solar landscape lighting clearly has one very important requirement: sunlight. Using solar lights in a shady area of your yard is not going to work very well. So, ensure the area where you plan on placing your new solar walkway lights will get sunlight for at least a few hours a day. If not, you might need to consider other forms of pathway lighting.

Fortunately, solar garden lights are easy to install and maintain. Sometimes, you will need to replace the rechargeable battery inside, especially if it has been exposed to extreme temperatures. Alternatively, if your lights seem dimmer, you may need to clean off the solar panel on the top of each light to maintain a higher level of solar energy absorption.
