Staying cool with a box fan or a floor fan

Why use a box fan or a floor fan?

Box fans and floor fans are ideal for creating air circulation between rooms or through a house. Most fit well in doorways, and small box fans can even conveniently fit in certain windows if you need a window fan to bring cool air inside or to send hot air out. A 20-inch box fan is a popular choice for moving a large amount of air in living spaces and garages.

Two box fans work well together to create a cross breeze. You can place one in a window to draw air into the room and another at a door or window on the other side of the room to send air out. You can also use a box or floor fan outdoors to create airflow and repel insects.

Using fans to cool your home is more energy efficient than using central air or a portable air conditioner. So, fans can make the perfect choice on warm days or during brief heat spikes. If you are preparing for a long heat wave, however, it is wise to invest in additional options, like an AC unit.

Choosing the right box fan or floor fan for your space

There are several types of box fans and floor fans to choose from. An industrial floor fan is a great option for large spaces or for drying paint, floor finishes or damp materials. You can find many adjustable-tilt floor fans and box fans. Oscillating floor fans are less common, but they’re useful if you really want the airflow to cover a particularly wide space.

Floor fans usually offer adjustable speeds. A 3-speed floor fan or box fan is the most common option, but some models offer more speeds.

In general, the more powerful the fan and the higher the speed setting, the more noise it will produce. Box fan noise can be noticeable at higher speeds, while industrial fans are generally quite loud because of the powerful current of air they create. If you want a quieter house fan, consider a tower fan or a desk fan. To prepare for particularly hot weather, you may also wish to choose a portable air conditioner for your home.
