We recommend cleaning dust from the unit, especially near the vent and checking the cord for frays. The unit should not be left running when no one is home. If you have just turned it on after a long period on inactivity, give it a few days to not smell. The fireplace itself is an 18" x 18" insert that is already assembled, and just needs to be secured in the center of the console with provided screws. It's a simple plug-in unit.
