My kids use it as a cash register. You do need to turn it on and choose a mode. Pick the other rather than the one you use to connect to the computer.

My kids use it as a "cash register". You do need to turn it on to and then click the 'Calc' button and it works. I use Bluetooth to connect to my computer, so I set the calculator to 2.4 mode, to make sure it doesn't connect by mistake.

No, it is actually a "standalone" calculator.
It isn't very bright.  But it works alone, and it clicks fine.  Though not super clicky.
