You don't have to, but if photos are coming from the phone app then it's best if it's connected. Photos will stay on the server for 12-24 hours, so if you connect within that timeframe of when photos were sent they should come in. Photos can also be uploaded from a 32GB or smaller SD card or USB thumb drive. Use .jpg format for photos.
