I had to use a desktop computer and enable popups. This allowed the Amazon screen to popup, login and activate.  I was unable to active via a mobile device (iPad, iPhone)

You should have received an email from "Best Buy Notification" a few minutes after you purchased the Echo device. Open email and follow prompts for activation.
