No, just rest the phone on the charger and it starts charging:)

No, the iPhone 12 series is backward comparable to normal Qi charging. You are limited to the slower charge rate compared to the Apple MagSafe but I use this overnight so I’m not looking to be charged quickly. My 12 mini is the first phone I have had that offers wireless charging and it is great.
