Yes, you can use one earbud at a time. I use both earbuds to listen to music and only one earbud to speak on a call. When I use both and one of them falls out, my music will stop playing until I put it back in but that's an option you can turn off in the Air Pod settings. 

The earbuds only need to be in close proximity to your phone to work. They do not need to be near the case or each other as long as your phone or whatever it is connected to is nearby.

Yes you can use one at a time. I will sometimes leave one in the case and use the other. Yes if you remove one it will pause your music/video but if you double tap the earbud that's in your ear it will resume.

Put both in and have stereo conversation...

If you take one out, they do shut off; however, you can put one in and listen with just one in. I do it all the time.

Yes, you can use just one AirPod at a time. Your iPhone will switch over to a mono mixdown so you hear both sides of any stereo audio.

You could use it as a workaround to use the AirPods for a longer time by using them one at a time.

You can use them separately for calls or music. You don't need to carry the case around either. Great purchase I have a pair of beats and I prefer these hands down.

Hello Jade, you can use 1 earbud at a time. Usually charge time is about 6 hours. I normally use 1 at a time and then I charge them together. 

As far as working close, I believe there's a distance before it logs off.

Yes if you only put one in your ear to start with you then music will play and you can answer phone calls as well. There are options for the Airpods that allow you to turn the feature off of when you take one out it stops playing music.

Well not all earbuds can work independently. For example, I perched (Bose - QuietComfort Earbuds True Wireless Noise Cancelling In-Ear Headphones) and I have to use both buds or the RIGHT ONE ONLY I can't use the left one independently. The other funny thing I found about these buds if I'm using only the right bud and keeping the left bud in the charging case (FULLY CHARGED) The battery will die on the left one also, how I don't know.

Yes, you can choose to only use one earbud at a time. If you take both earbuds from the case and place them on your ear and then start playing music on your app, then yes removing one earbud from your ear will pause the music. However, if you only take a single earbud and leave the other in the case, then it will know you are only using a single earbud.

I've used mine with just one. It does not force you to use two. For example, you can use one as a typical bluetooth headset. Works great!
