Can use one at a time and talk through it only. You have a way of setting that up through the settings.

You can wear them 1 at a time, BUT. The only caveat is that there are preset double-tap settings for each of the sides. So if you have the left in and its programmed for Siri, and you want to go to the next song, you have to use your phone or watch. Same thing with the left. Its either Siri, Next Song, or Play/pause for the double-click options. 

I operate primarily all day with 1 at a time unless I just want to noise cancel and put them both in.

Yes. I wear a single airpod more often than I do both actually and switch from left to right all the time.

They Both Have Talking Speakers So If One Goes Dead While You Are On The Phone, You Will Still Be Able To Use The Other One.

Yes you can wear one at a time. I wear one and always have one on standby. They last forever and it only takes 15 minutes to charge!

Yes. You can wear one at a time. The built-in sensor will recognize that only one headphone is enabled and will switch to surround sound.
You have the ability to change what happens when you double-tap the headphone (next track, previous track, play/pause, Siri).
