Yes. It works by Bluetooth so you must be in range with your device. Also no you must use your device to change any setting.

It needs to be vicinity - it's bluetooth - but don't have to carry. I can still hear what's happening several rooms away from phone or MacBook. You can set up so that when you double tap left side or ride side different things happen... i.e., I have mine set up so that double tap on my left AirPod means stop playing and double tap on my right one skips to next song. Basic functionality but that's all I need.

They are bluetooth headphones. Just like any other bluetooth devices, if you go too far, then you will lose the connection. You also need to use your phone to change the settings.
