Yes, you can use one earbud at a time. I use both earbuds to listen to music and only one earbud to speak on a call. When I use both and one of them falls out, my music will stop playing until I put it back in but that's an option you can turn off in the Air Pod settings. The earbuds only need to be in close proximity to your phone to work. They do not need to be near the case or each other as long as your phone or whatever it is connected to is nearby.
