So far mine just does 4 rounds of pinging noise and then stops until it is initiated again. 
I think the lost feature is to safeguard data... not to really notify that your dog or item is lost. Like more of a notice for apple than for the owner.

No it won’t, it will only ping if you press the “make a sound”button.
