“It says "data plan required" but it's unlocked. Is this an error, or do I need to know which plan I want it have before I purchase? I am testing out pre-paid plans. Also, can I purchase Geek Squad 3rd party insurance for this phone?”

You don’t need to have a provider or data plan prior to purchasing the unlocked phone. It only states data plan required because the phone won’t work without one. Make sure you select a prepaid plan provider that supports the iPhone and can provide the appropriate size SIM card.
